Microsoft and CO280 Launch One of the Largest U.S. Carbon Removal Projects with AFRY’s Strategic Support

(IN BRIEF) AFRY has supported Microsoft in finalizing a major 12-year carbon removal offtake agreement with CO280 for ~3.7 million tonnes of biogenic CO₂ removal via a BECCS facility on the U.S. Gulf Coast. The project, one of the largest of its kind in the U.S., retrofits pulp and paper mills to capture CO₂, creating local jobs and leveraging nearby storage infrastructure. AFRY’s due diligence helped mitigate project risk and ensure quality, reinforcing its role in scaling up engineered carbon removal as part of global net-zero goals.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 24-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — AFRY has played a pivotal role in one of the largest engineered carbon removal agreements in the U.S. to date, advising Microsoft on its groundbreaking 12-year offtake agreement with CO280. The agreement covers approximately 3.7 million metric tons of high-quality carbon dioxide removals from a bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS) facility set to be developed along the U.S. Gulf Coast.

This milestone deal signals a significant advance for engineered carbon removal, leveraging retrofitted pulp and paper mills to capture biogenic CO₂ emissions. In addition to supporting Microsoft’s climate targets, the project will spur local economic activity by generating employment opportunities in timberland communities and tapping into nearby CO₂ storage sites to enhance efficiency.

“We commend Microsoft’s bold leadership in backing scalable carbon removal pathways,” said a spokesperson for AFRY. “By conducting thorough due diligence, we’ve helped ensure the project’s credibility and long-term viability, aligning environmental progress with economic development.”

CO280, the project developer, brings deep expertise in carbon removal infrastructure and is helping set a new benchmark for BECCS deployment. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to delivering scalable, sustainable climate action that contributes meaningfully to the transition to net zero.

AFRY’s involvement in the agreement illustrates its growing role in enabling global decarbonisation initiatives and scaling up high-integrity climate solutions through technical and strategic advisory services.
