AFRY Secures Key Contracts for Zurich Western Bypass Refurbishment with Swiss Federal Road Authority

(IN BRIEF) AFRY has been awarded two important contracts as part of a consortium for the refurbishment of the Zurich Western Bypass by the Swiss Federal Road Authority (FEDRO). AFRY’s responsibilities include the planning and supervision of tunnel lighting and the design and management of traffic systems. The project will run from 2025 to 2035, with AFRY’s work valued at 188 MSEK in total.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 15-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — AFRY has been awarded two key projects for the refurbishment of Zurich’s Western Bypass by the Swiss Federal Road Authority (FEDRO). The projects are part of a larger consortium effort to modernize the A1, A3, and A4 motorways that make up the bypass. This bypass, operational since 2009, has played a crucial role in easing traffic congestion in Zurich, providing an efficient route for commuters and freight.

As part of the consortium, AFRY has been tasked with overseeing the planning, supervision, and modernization of the operating and safety equipment for these highways. Specifically, in February, AFRY took on the planning and supervision of tunnel lighting, and in April, the company became responsible for the design and management of the traffic systems within the project.

Marcel Winter, the Country Manager for AFRY in Switzerland, expressed his enthusiasm about contributing to the improvement of Zurich’s transport infrastructure. The financials for the project have been outlined, with the estimated value of AFRY’s work on the tunnel lighting set at 50 MSEK, while the traffic engineering work, spanning from 2025 to 2035, is valued at 138 MSEK.
