(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 16-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced the appointment of Maya Hennerkes as Managing Director of its Environment and Sustainability Department, effective 15 September 2025. She succeeds Henrik Linders, who stepped down at the end of August.

A German national, Ms Hennerkes has been a driving force in shaping the EBRD’s sustainable finance agenda since joining the Bank in 2019. Most recently serving as Director of Green Financial Systems in the Climate Strategy and Delivery team, she spearheaded the Bank’s work on Paris alignment, the green economy transition, and initiatives in green capital markets.

Prior to her time at the EBRD, she held senior positions at the Inter-American Development Bank and IDB Invest, where she gained significant expertise in environmental and social risk management, sustainability policy, and accountability frameworks. Her international experience across multilateral development banks has equipped her with a strong foundation to lead the Bank’s next phase of sustainability initiatives.

The Environment and Sustainability Department plays a vital role in ensuring all EBRD investments meet environmental and social policy requirements. It also works closely with clients to strengthen sustainability practices and promotes innovation in areas such as climate resilience, biodiversity, and inclusive transition—key elements of the EBRD’s broader mission to foster sustainable economic growth.

With her new appointment, Ms Hennerkes will continue to advance the Bank’s leadership in sustainable finance and further integrate environmental and social priorities into its operations across regions.
