International Women’s Day 2013: events at the European Parliament on women and the economic crisis

The European Parliament is marking International Women’s Day this year by hosting a workshop for journalists and a discussion between MEPs and national MPs on women and the economic crisis

5-3-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — Workshop for journalists on “Women and the Economic Crisis” Parliament’s press service is inviting experts and journalists to discuss “Women and the Economic Crisis” with MEPs, at a workshop on Wednesday, 6 March. chaired by German ALDE MEP Silvana Koch-Mehrin.

Participants will exchange views on the effects of the current economic crisis on women. They will look at ways of tackling the crisis at European level and its impact on legislation relating to women’s rights.

The findings of a new Eurobarometer survey on gender inequalities in the context of the crisis, commissioned by the European Parliament, will be officially published on 6 March.

The workshop will be followed by a public  screening of the film “Louise Wimmer”, followed by a debate.

Discussion by MEPs and national MPs on “Women’s Response to the Crisis”
Parliament’s women’s rights and gender equality committee will discuss “Women’s Response to the Crisis” with MPs from national parliaments at a meeting on Thursday, 7 March. They will examine the impact of the crisis on gender equality and share best practice and experience. The meeting will be chaired by Mikael Gustafsson (EUL/NGL, SE) and opened by Gianni Pittella, Vice-President of the European Parliament,.
