Ingka Group Unveils Comprehensive Net Zero Transition Plan, Driving Forward Sustainable Practices Across Its Global Operations

(IN BRIEF) Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer, has launched its detailed Net Zero Transition Plan, setting clear actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The plan outlines strategic initiatives for decarbonization across its value chain, with a focus on innovation, collaboration, and sustainable practices that aim to inspire global change.

(PRESS RELEASE) LEIDEN, 17-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer, has published its highly anticipated Net Zero Transition Plan, detailing the company’s roadmap to reduce its absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 50% by 2030 (compared to a FY16 baseline) and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This ambitious plan aligns with the goals set out in the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature increases to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Building on significant progress, Ingka Group has already reduced its climate footprint by 30.1% compared to the FY16 baseline, while simultaneously expanding its business by 23.7%. The company first established science-based climate targets in 2018 and strengthened its commitment in 2023 as part of the IKEA climate ambition “Net Zero and Beyond.” The updated Net Zero Transition Plan marks a critical step in accelerating Ingka Group’s sustainability efforts, setting a clear direction for decarbonization across all aspects of its business.

Building a Sustainable Future Across the Value Chain
Ingka Group’s new climate transition plan outlines detailed strategies for decarbonization, focusing on key emission categories, including store operations, construction materials, mobility, and investments. Through a comprehensive analysis of these areas, the company aims to identify high-impact actions that will help reduce its carbon footprint while empowering consumers to make more sustainable choices.

Key initiatives highlighted in the transition plan include:

  • Impactful Actions: Identifying and scaling emission-reducing measures in areas where Ingka can make the greatest impact, such as continuing to expand zero-emission deliveries and increasing investments in renewable energy.
  • Innovation and Efficiency Gaps: Addressing areas where Ingka can scale existing solutions, including renewable heating and cooling systems, and adopting lower-emission materials and technologies across its operations.
  • Governance and Leadership: Ensuring high-level involvement from senior management in integrating sustainability into business and innovation decisions, further embedding climate goals within the organization.
  • Climate Risk and Opportunity Assessment: Providing an updated overview of the climate risks Ingka faces, particularly extreme weather events, and the potential value at stake if no action is taken. This assessment aligns with the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework.

Collaboration for a Global Impact
Karen Pflug, Chief Sustainability Officer at Ingka Group, emphasized the company’s commitment: “Sustainability has always been at the heart of IKEA’s mission, and the publication of our Net Zero Transition Plan provides us with a clearer, more detailed roadmap for achieving our climate goals. Our colleagues across the business have worked tirelessly to create this plan, which delves deeper into every aspect of our emissions categories. We hope that our transparency around challenges, dependencies, and innovation gaps will inspire others and help drive meaningful conversations to support both our business and broader society in this transition.”

Simon Henzell-Thomas, Ingka Group’s Climate & Nature Manager, echoed the importance of collaboration: “Addressing climate change is a complex challenge, and we cannot do it alone. As a global business, we have a responsibility to lead by example, but we must work together with governments, industries, and customers to drive real change. 2025 is a critical year for governments to meet their climate goals, and we invite all stakeholders to collaborate in accelerating the transition to a sustainable future.”

A Call for Radical Collaboration
Ingka Group is calling on businesses of all sizes, governments, and individuals to play an active role in accelerating climate action. The company advocates for ambitious climate plans aligned with a 1.5°C target, the phase-out of fossil fuels, and investment in renewable energy infrastructure. Ingka Group also stresses the need for robust policies supporting renewable energy, circularity, sustainable transport, responsible agriculture, and forest management.
