IKEA confirms December 2025 opening of first New Zealand store at Sylvia Park with nationwide Pick-Up Points

(IN BRIEF) IKEA is preparing to open its first store in New Zealand on December 4, 2025, at Sylvia Park in Auckland. Operated by Ingka Group, the 34,000 m² store will offer more than 7,500 products from day one and will be supported by 29 nationwide Pick-Up Points and home delivery services to make shopping more accessible across the country. The opening will also introduce services such as Buy Back, enabling customers to return used furniture for resale, as part of IKEA’s sustainability mission. A Swedish Restaurant and Bistro will feature traditional favorites and unique dishes designed for New Zealand. The store will run fully on renewable energy, supported by rooftop solar power, LED lighting, and EV charging stations. The launch is part of Ingka Group’s multi-billion-euro global expansion strategy and represents IKEA’s first entry into a new market since its 2021 opening in Slovenia.

(PRESS RELEASE) LEIDEN, 4-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer worldwide, has confirmed that New Zealand’s very first IKEA store will open its doors at Sylvia Park, Auckland, on December 4, 2025—two years after construction first began. The milestone marks a major step in IKEA’s global expansion strategy and will introduce New Zealanders to the full IKEA experience both online and in-store.

In just three months, the global furniture leader will greet Kiwis with the words “Kia ora” as it launches its first store in the country. From the opening day, more than 7,500 home furnishing products will be available across multiple channels—online, by phone, and in person at the Sylvia Park store. To celebrate the official “save the date,” the retailer recently unveiled its iconic blue and yellow wordmark on the exterior of the Sylvia Park building, offering a first glimpse of what is to come.

Tolga Öncu, Ingka Retail Manager (COO) at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), emphasized the significance of this opening:
“The excitement and anticipation surrounding IKEA’s arrival in New Zealand are reaching as far as Sweden. We feel truly honored by this warm welcome. Every time IKEA enters a new market, it brings a unique emotional connection, and we look forward to meeting the people of New Zealand and helping them create better everyday lives at home.”

The Auckland site will span 34,000 m², making it one of the largest IKEA outlets in the region, and it will be supported by a network of 29 nationwide Pick-Up Points, a first-of-its-kind rollout for the brand when entering a new country. Complemented by home delivery services, this strategy ensures IKEA’s blend of affordable, functional, and stylish home furnishings will be accessible to households across the nation.

IKEA Sylvia Park will also introduce its Buy Back service on opening day, encouraging customers to return pre-loved IKEA items—or even furniture from other retailers—for resale, reinforcing IKEA’s commitment to sustainability and giving second life to quality furniture.

To keep New Zealanders connected ahead of the launch, IKEA has already activated its IKEA Family loyalty program. Members of the free-to-join program will gain exclusive benefits, early access to offers, and tailored experiences. Registration is now open at www.IKEA.co.nz.

The opening of the Sylvia Park store marks IKEA’s first entry into a new market since 2021, when a store opened in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Ingka Group’s wider strategy involves investing more than EUR 5 billion by the fiscal year 2027 to expand into new regions and modernize existing locations.
