Gasum Expands Joensuu Filling Station to Support Heavy Duty Transport with Liquefied Biogas Infrastructure

(IN BRIEF) Gasum has expanded its filling station in Joensuu to include liquefied biogas refuelling for heavy-duty vehicles, improving both fuel availability and operational reliability in Eastern Finland. The upgrade makes the station the easternmost LBG facility in the country and increases Gasum’s national network to 23 stations. The development supports transport companies in adopting low-emission fuels and benefits local operator Savonlinja, which is expanding its fleet of gas-powered buses. The new infrastructure helps address previous supply challenges while enabling more efficient operations. Biogas, as a renewable fuel with significantly lower emissions than diesel, plays an important role in advancing sustainable transport and circular economy practices in the region.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 7-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum has completed the expansion of its filling station in Joensuu, introducing liquefied biogas (LBG) refuelling capabilities for heavy-duty vehicles and enhancing the reliability of compressed gas distribution in the region.

Previously serving lighter vehicles with compressed biogas, the upgraded station now accommodates heavy transport, marking a significant step in strengthening gas-powered mobility infrastructure in Eastern Finland. As the easternmost LBG station in the country, the Joensuu facility expands access to low-emission fuel alternatives and supports the wider adoption of sustainable transport solutions.

With the addition of this site, Gasum’s network of LBG filling stations for heavy-duty vehicles in Finland now totals 23. The expansion aligns with the company’s long-term strategy to develop a comprehensive refuelling network across major transport routes, enabling logistics operators to transition toward cleaner fuel options.

Juho Kurra, Head of Business for Traffic Finland at Gasum, noted that the company has spent the past decade building an efficient infrastructure to support low-emission transport. He emphasized that the new station creates further opportunities for transport companies to adopt biogas as a responsible alternative to conventional fuels.

The upgrade also benefits local transport operator Savonlinja, which manages bus services in Joensuu and other cities in Eastern Finland. The addition of liquefied gas capabilities improves operational reliability, as LBG can be vaporized when needed to support compressed gas supply, reducing the risk of fuel shortages. A new refuelling point for buses has also been introduced to ease demand.

Jukka Komulainen, Business Director at Savonlinja, highlighted the positive impact of the expansion, noting that previous fuel supply limitations had occasionally disrupted operations. The company is increasing its fleet of gas-powered buses to 55 by August, using them for regional and local transport services.

In public transport procurement processes, the City of Joensuu has prioritised environmentally friendly solutions such as gas and electric vehicles. According to Komulainen, biogas offers practical advantages, including the ability to cover distances of 500 to 600 kilometres on a single tank, making it a reliable choice for daily operations. He also pointed to the strong acceptance among drivers and passengers, as well as the economic benefits compared to electric vehicles.

Biogas plays a key role in reducing emissions in both public and heavy-duty transport. Compared to traditional fossil fuels such as diesel, the lifecycle emissions associated with biogas—from production to use—are on average around 90 percent lower. As a fully renewable energy source, it also supports circular economy principles, as it is produced locally from organic waste streams.

Through the expansion of its Joensuu station, Gasum continues to strengthen its infrastructure for sustainable transport and support the transition toward lower-emission mobility across Finland.
