(PRESS RELEASE) HANOVER, 27-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Continental has been named one of the 500 most sustainable companies globally for 2024, according to a ranking by Time magazine and Statista. The company earned recognition for its significant efforts in reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and increasing the use of renewable energy. Continental scored 61.39 out of 100, securing the 265th spot overall, and ranked among the top 10 companies in the automotive industry. Notably, Continental was one of only three tire manufacturers to make the list, placing second among them.

Jorge Almeida, Head of Sustainability at Continental Tires, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability across the entire value chain, from sourcing sustainable materials to production and recycling. “We are proud to see our efforts independently recognized, reflecting our commitment to providing sustainable solutions while upholding top-quality standards,” said Almeida.

Continental has made considerable progress towards climate-neutral production, with initiatives like achieving carbon-neutral tire manufacturing at its Lousado plant in Portugal. The facility utilizes steam generated by an electrically powered boiler, driven by solar power and renewable energy from the grid. In 2023, Continental’s energy-saving projects reduced annual consumption by 150 gigawatt hours, equivalent to the energy needs of 12,500 homes. Additionally, the company cut CO2 emissions by 31,000 tons last year.

Continental aims to increase the share of renewable and recycled materials in its tires to more than 40 percent by 2030, with the long-term goal of manufacturing fully sustainable tires by 2050.
