BAE Systems, Boeing, and Saab Form Strategic Partnership to Supply Next-Generation Fast-Jet Trainer for the RAF

(IN BRIEF) BAE Systems, Boeing, and Saab have formalized a Letter of Intent to jointly support the UK Royal Air Force’s fast-jet pilot training program, using the advanced T-7 aircraft as the foundation of a new high-performance aviation training system. The initiative places BAE Systems at the helm of final assembly in the UK and will include integration of live-virtual-constructive training environments, helping ensure that RAF pilots are fully prepared to operate cutting-edge fighter fleets. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to international defense capability, expanding the UK’s domestic manufacturing base, and meeting the strategic goals outlined in the 2025 Strategic Defence Review. By combining their respective technological strengths, the companies aim to deliver a modern successor to the Hawk trainer and future-proof pilot training in both the UK and global markets.

(PRESS RELEASE) AUSTRALIA, 18-Nov-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — A new strategic collaboration has been launched by BAE Systems, Boeing, and Saab to support the UK Royal Air Force’s fast-jet trainer programme, offering a highly advanced training system centered on the T-7 aircraft. The three industry leaders have signed a Letter of Intent that will see BAE Systems lead a UK-based final assembly of the platform, creating highly skilled roles and strengthening the country’s aerospace footprint. The collaboration aims to integrate state-of-the-art live and synthetic training technologies with mission-ready systems, providing a future-proof solution for RAF pilot training and potentially expanding to international training markets.

The T-7A Red Hawk, already selected by the United States Air Force, is at the core of this alliance. Designed for next-generation aircrew preparation, the aircraft combines advanced virtual and live training environments with a modular platform that supports evolving missions and technologies, positioning it as a clear successor to the Hawk trainer now in service.

Simon Barnes, Group Managing Director of BAE Systems’ Air sector, underscored the importance of the venture, stating: “Our collaboration with Boeing and Saab positions us to offer the UK Royal Air Force and global operators an innovative and highly capable training solution. It’s an opportunity to advance combat air readiness while generating meaningful economic value in the UK.”

Boeing’s Vice President of Business Development & Strategy for Defense, Space & Security, Bernd Peters, highlighted the international benefits: “This strategic effort brings together the strengths of our transatlantic partners to deliver some of the world’s most advanced pilot training capability. It’s a vital step in preparing RAF pilots for the next generation of air platforms.”

Lars Tossman, Head of Saab’s Aeronautics business area, added: “The T-7 is ready for future training demands. By joining forces with BAE Systems, we can offer the UK a truly capable successor to the Hawk, with long-term adaptability and technological relevance built in.”

The initiative directly responds to goals outlined in the 2025 Strategic Defence Review and reinforces the UK’s commitment to maintaining cutting-edge training for fighter pilots entering into service on advanced fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-generation aircraft.
