BAE Systems Lands $177.8M Contract to Modernize USS Halsey

(IN BRIEF) BAE Systems has been awarded a $177.8 million contract by the U.S. Navy to modernize and maintain the USS Halsey, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer. The contract, which could reach $225.5 million if all options are exercised, involves upgrading the ship’s Aegis combat system, enhancing its command-and-control systems, refurbishing crew living spaces, and performing underwater hull preservation. The work, set to begin in San Diego this month, will continue into 2026. BAE Systems’ San Diego shipyard recently completed similar work on the USS Mustin and is well-equipped for the project.

(PRESS RELEASE) FARNBOROUGH, 27-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — BAE Systems has been awarded a $177.8 million contract by the U.S. Navy for extensive maintenance and modernization work on the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey (DDG 97). If all contract options are utilized, the project’s total value could increase to $225.5 million.

The contract, part of the Depot Maintenance Period (DMP), involves dry-docking the USS Halsey at BAE Systems’ San Diego shipyard. Key tasks will include underwater hull preservation, upgrading the ship’s Aegis combat system with the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (Block 3), enhancing command-and-control systems, and refurbishing living spaces for the ship’s 260 crew members. Work on the 509.5-foot vessel is set to commence later this month and will continue into 2026.

“This kind of extensive maintenance is critical to ensuring the combat effectiveness of the USS Halsey,” said Eric Icke, Vice President and General Manager of BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair. “Our team is prepared to carry out the necessary DMP work to bring the Halsey up to its next phase of fleet readiness.”

BAE Systems’ San Diego facility recently completed similar work on the USS Mustin (DDG 89), and the USS Halsey marks the shipyard’s fifth DMP project.

The USS Halsey, commissioned in July 2005, is the 47th ship in the Arleigh Burke class and honors Fleet Admiral William F. “Bull” Halsey, a key figure in the Pacific theater during World War II.

BAE Systems is a prominent provider of ship repair and modernization services for the U.S. Navy and other government agencies, with shipyards in California, Florida, and Virginia. The San Diego shipyard, staffed by around 650 workers, is equipped with seven dry-docks and railways, offering comprehensive ship support services.
