(IN BRIEF) The Albanian government, as part of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s (EBRD) Renewable Energy Auction program, is set to launch a tender for 300 MW of solar power, with the goal of adding at least 1 GW of renewable capacity to the country. This will make a significant contribution to Albania’s future renewable energy supply, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and align with its climate objectives. The EBRD has played a leading role in promoting renewable solar and wind power in Albania, assisting the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy with two solar auctions and currently working with them on the country’s first 150 MW onshore wind auction.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 24-Apr-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), a multilateral developmental investment bank, announces that the Albanian government is set to launch a tender for 300 Megawatts (MW) of solar power as part of the EBRD’s Renewable Energy Auction programme in Albania. The tender is the first of at least three competitive procedures aimed at adding an additional 1 Gigawatt (GW) of renewable capacity to the country, with the goal of becoming a net exporter of renewable energy by 2030.

The initiative, expected to be launched by June, will be supported by the EBRD, with grant financing from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). The tender will lead to a series of renewable investments, with bidder-selected sites offering full details in the English version.

Ekaterina Solovova, EBRD Head of Albania commented “We remain a committed partner to the authorities and open to cooperate with all donors for the development of the renewable energy sector in Albania.

The EBRD has played a leading role in promoting renewable solar and wind power in Albania through policy engagement, technical assistance and investment. The Bank has assisted the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy with two solar auctions for a total of 240MW, and is currently working with the ministry on the country’s first 150MW onshore wind auction. The Bank will also be working on developing the country’s offshore wind potential.

Gianpiero Nacci, Director Sustainable Business and Infrastructure says “Our work in Albania shows what can be achieved with the appropriate legal and regulatory framework, credible government commitments and the importance of the running competitive tenders. We are delighted to continue to support the country in meeting their ambitious targets.”

As a key institutional investor in Albania, the EBRD has invested more than €1.9 billion in 137 projects across the country. The tender for solar power will make a significant contribution to Albania’s future renewable energy supply, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and align with its climate objectives. Prospective bidders are invited to start project preparation activities.
