TÜV Rheinland develops new standard for efficient stand-by power mode

1-2-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — TÜV Rheinland, the global top ten provider of technical services, has developed a new standard for efficient stand-power mode of consumer electronics goods. Certificates for the new “ecOstandby” standard are awarded to products that pass stricter than normal energy efficiency requirements. The technical standard has been developed in by TÜV Rheinland in Germany, testing was performed at the company’s Electrical laboratory in Korea.

Even when an electronic good is not in use it will still consume electric power still when plugged in. The amount consumed at this point is called stand-by power. TÜV Rheinland’s ecOstandby certification is awarded to products which minimize energy consumption during stand-by mode and thus have proven their highly efficient usage of energy with regard to mandatory requirements.

The first product that has been certified with the ecOstandby standard is the Samsung Smart TV. It is also the first consumer good that will be using TÜV Rheinland’s new test mark which was launched for global use in January this year.

“We believe that our new ecOstandby certification will help manufacturers of consumer goods to distinguish themselves from their competitors in the market. At the same time, our new global test mark will give more transparency to what test certificates mean for customers”, says Stefan Kischka, Global Business Field Manager Electrical at TÜV Rheinland.

TÜV Rheinland’s relaunched test mark now uses an „app“-shaped rectangle with a respective keyword inserted beside the test mark. A QR code can now be added to the test mark, depending on the customer’s request. The applied QR code can be read with suitable smart phone applications; it connects users with a database where they can check certification details.

The introduction of QR code to TÜV Rheinland’s new test mark improves safety and quality by adding transparency to the information given. Another benefit for customers using the new testmark is the high advertising value.
