RWE Advances Scotland’s Energy Transition with Commissioning of 36 MW Camster II Wind Farm

(IN BRIEF) RWE has successfully completed and commissioned its Camster II onshore wind farm in Caithness, Scotland, adding 36 MW of renewable energy capacity capable of powering around 51,000 homes. The project, which began construction in 2023, represents a key addition to RWE’s growing cluster of wind farms in the region, enhancing operational efficiencies and contributing to Scotland’s energy transition. Beyond energy generation, the development has delivered strong local economic benefits, with significant involvement from regional contractors and the creation of jobs during both construction and operational phases. RWE is also advancing a new community benefits programme while continuing to invest in existing local initiatives that support education, training, and social development. Environmental considerations played a role as well, with innovative peat restoration methods and improved public access infrastructure incorporated into the project. As part of a wider pipeline of four wind farms totaling up to 232 MW, Camster II underscores RWE’s long-term commitment to expanding renewable energy capacity, strengthening energy security, and supporting sustainable regional development in Scotland.

(PRESS RELEASE) SWINDON, 23-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE Renewables Europe & Australia GmbH has announced the completion and commissioning of its Camster II onshore wind farm in Caithness, Scotland, marking another milestone in its expanding renewable energy portfolio across the UK. The 36 MW project, which received planning consent in July 2021 and began construction in 2023, started generating electricity in March 2026 and is now fully operational, with the capacity to supply power equivalent to around 51,000 typical homes.

The Camster II development represents RWE’s fourth operational wind farm in the Caithness region, strengthening a growing cluster of renewable energy assets that benefit from shared infrastructure and operational efficiencies. The project also reflects a strong emphasis on local economic participation, with principal contractor Farrans playing a central role in delivery. During construction, Farrans supported more than 50 jobs, including opportunities for early-career civil engineering students and apprentices. Notably, over half of its subcontractors were sourced from within a 20-mile radius of the site, including regional firms such as Gow Earthworks, GMR Hendersons and John Gunn and Sons, accounting for a majority share of subcontracting expenditure.

Sopna Sury highlighted the project as a demonstration of RWE’s ability to deliver large-scale onshore wind developments while contributing to local economies and communities. She noted that each operational turbine reflects tangible progress in advancing Scotland’s transition to renewable energy. Patrick Murray emphasized the long-standing collaboration between Farrans and RWE, underscoring the contractor’s experience in delivering wind energy projects across Scotland.

With construction now complete, the wind farm will transition to an operational phase supported by locally based engineers and technical specialists, further reinforcing long-term employment opportunities in the region. At the same time, RWE continues to work with Farrans on the nearby Golticlay wind farm, part of a broader pipeline of projects in Scotland.

In parallel with energy generation, RWE is developing a community benefits programme tailored to the Caithness area, with priorities being shaped in collaboration with local stakeholders. Once finalized, the initiative will complement the company’s existing contributions, which now exceed £580,000 annually in the region and have already delivered more than £3.5 million toward community initiatives, education, and training.

The Camster II project also incorporates environmental and social enhancements. During construction, an innovative peat reinstatement technique—reusing peat extracted from turbine foundations—was trialed and received recognition from NatureScot and environmental organizations. Infrastructure improvements were also made, including resurfacing a local path and installing a new equestrian gate to enhance access for recreational users.

Comprising 10 turbines, Camster II is the first of four new RWE onshore wind farms in Scotland to be completed. The broader development programme includes Strathy Wood, Enoch Hill, and Golticlay, which together will deliver up to 232 MW of additional renewable capacity, supporting the country’s long-term energy security and decarbonization goals.
