RWE Expands Long Term Renewable Energy Agreement with ASML to Support Growing Industrial Demand

Credit: RWE

(IN BRIEF) RWE has expanded its Power Purchase Agreement with ASML, increasing renewable capacity to around 130 MW and extending the contract until 2038. The agreement includes power from offshore and onshore wind farms in Belgium and the Netherlands, supplying ASML’s facilities with green electricity. A central component is the OranjeWind offshore wind project, developed with TotalEnergies, which will integrate renewable generation with advanced energy technologies. The partnership reflects rising energy demand from digital industries and supports both companies’ sustainability and decarbonisation objectives.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 3-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has expanded its long-term renewable energy partnership with ASML, increasing the scale of their existing Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and extending its duration through to 2038. Originally signed in 2021, the agreement now covers approximately 130 megawatts of installed renewable capacity, reflecting growing energy demand driven by digitalisation and advanced manufacturing.

Under the updated agreement, electricity will be supplied from a diversified portfolio of wind energy assets, including the Belgian Northwester 2 offshore wind farm as well as several Dutch onshore and offshore projects operated by RWE. These include the OranjeWind offshore wind farm alongside the Kattenberg, Zuidwester, Westereems, and Oostpolderdijk onshore wind farms.

The renewable electricity generated under this agreement will be used to power ASML’s operations in the Netherlands, supporting the company’s efforts to secure reliable and sustainable energy sources for its high-tech manufacturing activities.

Ulf Kerstin noted that the extended collaboration highlights the importance of long-term partnerships in delivering carbon-free electricity at scale. He emphasized that the increasing demand for energy, driven by digital technologies, requires large-scale renewable solutions capable of ensuring both supply reliability and grid resilience.

A key component of the agreement is the OranjeWind project, a large-scale offshore wind development located approximately 53 kilometres off the coast of IJmuiden in the Netherlands. Developed as a joint initiative between RWE and TotalEnergies, the project will have a total capacity of 795 megawatts. Offshore construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with full commissioning expected by early 2028.

OranjeWind is designed as an integrated energy system that combines offshore wind generation with complementary technologies such as electrolysis, battery storage, smart charging infrastructure, and electric boilers. This approach aims to better align electricity generation with demand patterns while enhancing overall grid stability.

The expanded agreement further strengthens RWE’s position as a key supplier of renewable energy to major industrial and technology companies, while supporting ASML’s transition toward more sustainable operations in line with broader decarbonisation goals.
