(PRESS RELEASE) OSLO, 2-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — AF Gruppen has entered into a new execution-phase agreement with Statsbygg covering the partial refurbishment of the historic Viking Ship Museum at Bygdøy. The contract is estimated at NOK 123 million, excluding VAT, and represents a key step forward in the broader redevelopment of the site.

The refurbishment forms an integral part of the overall New Viking Age Museum project, in which the existing museum building will take on an important role within the future museum complex. Once the works are completed, the renovated structure will accommodate several core functions, including the main visitor entrance, a museum shop, educational and learning spaces, as well as office facilities. The scope of the project includes approximately 4,500 square metres of internal refurbishment and modernization.

The work will be carried out under a collaborative contracting model, with AF Gruppen working in close partnership with Statsbygg throughout the process. Phase 1 of the project has been underway for about a year, focusing on planning and preparation. The execution phase, Phase 2, is scheduled to begin in June 2026 and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2027. Should additional optional works be approved, such as refurbishment of the roof and protected façade, the total contract value will increase accordingly.

Eirik Wraal, Executive Vice President for Building, Energy and Environment at AF Gruppen, highlights the strong and constructive collaboration between the two organizations since the start of the New Viking Age Museum project in spring 2021. He notes that this agreement marks the fourth sub-project under the museum’s redevelopment and underscores AF Gruppen’s expertise in heritage conservation and the restoration of listed buildings.
