CAF Awarded €60 Million Contract to Supply Euskotren with State-of-the-Art Trains for Metro Bilbao Line 5

The trains, from CAF’s 980 series, will operate on the new Metro Bilbao line 5. The contract includes the provision of CAF’s onboard level 1 ERTMS system for the new units and for Euskotren’s existing 28 electric units from the 950 series. The agreement aims to ensure compliance with European railway safety standards. The delivery of the new trains is expected between 2026 and 2027. (PRESS RELEASE) BEASAIN, Spain, 13-Jul-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Euskotren, a public company under the Basque Government Ministry of Urban Planning (formally Basque Railways), Housing, and Transport, has awarded a contract to CAF, Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (BME: CAF), a Spanish railway equipment manufacturer, for the supply of five new electric trains. These trains, from CAF’s 980 series, will operate on the new Metro Bilbao line 5. The agreement also includes the provision of CAF’s onboard level 1 ERTMS system for the new units as well as Euskotren’s existing fleet of 28 electric units from the 950 series, ensuring compliance with European railway safety standards. The total contract value is approximately €60 million.

Over the years, Euskotren has acquired trains from subsequent series and upgraded the initial units to ensure consistency in design. In addition to enhancing service quality and safety, these latest-generation trains will contribute to reduced maintenance costs for the fleet.
