Tampa Electric selects Alstom to provide steam turbine generator set for its Polk Power Station

18-4-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — Tampa Electric, which provides electricity for more than 687,000 homes and businesses in West Central Florida, has selected Alstom to provide a new steam turbine generator set for its Polk Power Station.  This equipment package, which includes an Alstom STF60C steam turbine and Gigatop generator, will increase the plant’s output by approximately 500MW when it comes online in 2017.

With demand for electricity in the Tampa area expected to rise over the next five years, and because several purchased-power agreements are due to expire, Tampa Electric received approval from Florida regulators in late 2012 to convert units 2 through 5 of the Polk Power Station from simple-cycle gas turbine power generation to a more efficient 4-on-1 combined-cycle configuration. Alstom’s steam turbine generator set will produce electricity using a steam flow supplied by new heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) to be installed alongside the facility’s four existing natural gas turbines.

“Alstom steam turbines are specifically designed to maximize efficiency by delivering consistent performance as operators adjust the output of their combined cycle power plants,” according to Patrick Fetzer, Vice President and head of Alstom’s North American gas business. “Installing this equipment offers utilities reliable operational flexibility to fine tune their plant’s output as demand for electricity changes. Flexibility is vital in today’s market as more and more utilities call on combined- cycle plants to provide both peak and base load power.”

Located approximately 40 miles southeast of Tampa, Fla., the Polk Power Station’s five generating units produce enough electricity to serve 75,000 homes. With this latest contract, Alstom has provided boilers, HRSG’s or steam turbine generators for three of Tampa Electric’s four power stations.
