Syngenta and Ceres Biotics Partner to Expand Access to VIXERAN® for Sustainable Nitrogen Management

Syngenta and Ceres Biotics Partner to Expand Access to VIXERAN® for Sustainable Nitrogen Management

(IN BRIEF) Syngenta and Ceres Biotics have entered into a partnership to expand access to VIXERAN®, a biostimulant that enhances nitrogen efficiency in crops. This collaboration aims to promote sustainable farming practices by optimizing fertilizer use, increasing yields, and reducing the environmental impact of agriculture. The product will soon be available to farmers globally.

(PRESS RELEASE) BASEL, 21-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Syngenta Crop Protection and Ceres Biotics have announced a strategic partnership aimed at bringing their innovative biological solution, VIXERAN®, to farmers around the globe. This collaboration is designed to help farmers optimize their nitrogen fertilizer use and transition toward more sustainable agricultural practices.

VIXERAN® is a cutting-edge biostimulant that harnesses the power of the endophytic bacteria Azotobacter salinestris strain CECT9690, enabling it to inhabit the internal tissues of plants without causing harm. This microbial technology offers several modes of action, allowing plants to more efficiently access nitrogen from both the soil and the atmosphere through their leaves and root systems. By complementing traditional nitrogen fertilizers, VIXERAN® provides a more sustainable solution for boosting crop yields.

Despite nitrogen being the most abundant gas in the atmosphere—comprising about 78% of air—plants are unable to directly utilize it. Currently, the agricultural industry relies on energy-intensive, synthetic nitrogen fertilizers that not only incur high costs but also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. The growing demand for more sustainable agricultural methods makes products like VIXERAN® increasingly important in reducing the environmental footprint of farming.

Jonathan Brown, Global Head of Seedcare and Biologicals at Syngenta, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable agriculture: “Syngenta is investing significantly in innovative biological solutions that enhance the efficiency of nutrient use. Biostimulants like VIXERAN® are critical to improving crop yields, soil health, and the overall sustainability of agriculture. We are thrilled to partner with Ceres Biotics in this rapidly evolving field of plant nutrition.”

Emilio Marin, CEO and co-founder of Ceres Biotics, expressed his excitement about the collaboration: “We are proud to collaborate with Syngenta to bring VIXERAN® to the global market. This partnership is a significant step toward empowering farmers with the tools they need to improve nutrient efficiency, increase yields, and adopt more sustainable agricultural practices.”

VIXERAN® provides farmers with greater flexibility in managing nitrogen usage and optimizing crop performance. It enhances yield potential when used alongside conventional nitrogen fertilizers, and in situations where nitrogen availability is constrained—whether due to environmental conditions or supply limitations—VIXERAN® helps ensure that farmers can still meet their yield targets.

This agreement builds on a previous collaboration to introduce VIXERAN® in the European Union and paves the way for its introduction to markets worldwide, extending the benefits of this innovative solution to farmers globally.
