Stadler Expands Partnership with Utah Transit Authority to Build 20 Additional Citylink Light Rail Vehicles in Salt Lake City

(IN BRIEF) Stadler has received an order from the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) for 20 additional Citylink light rail vehicles, doubling the TRAX fleet to 40 trains. Built at Stadler’s Salt Lake City facility, the vehicles will serve as part of UTA’s TRAX Forward expansion plan to modernize public transport in Utah. Featuring low-floor accessibility and energy-efficient design, the new Citylink trains will enhance passenger comfort and support sustainable regional growth. The updated design is being revealed at the Utah Transportation Conference this week.

(PRESS RELEASE) SALT LAKE CITY, UT, Unites States, 28-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Stadler has strengthened its collaboration with the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) through a new order for 20 additional Citylink light rail vehicles, doubling the existing fleet under construction for the TRAX service in and around Salt Lake City. The vehicles will be built locally at Stadler’s Salt Lake City manufacturing facility, reinforcing the company’s commitment to local investment, job creation, and the continued modernization of Utah’s public transportation network.

The order fulfills an option from the original 2024 contract—valued at $129 million and partially funded by a Federal Transit Administration grant—which included 20 vehicles and options for up to 60 more. With this expansion, UTA now has 40 Citylink vehicles on order as part of its long-term “TRAX Forward” initiative, aimed at increasing capacity, improving accessibility, and preparing the light rail system for the region’s growing population.

“UTA’s decision to expand its TRAX fleet reflects the strength of our partnership and our shared dedication to building a world-class transit system for Utah,” said Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler US Inc. “Producing these vehicles in Salt Lake City demonstrates how international rail innovation can drive local growth and sustainability. These modern, accessible trains will set a new standard for comfort, reliability, and design.”

The low-floor Citylink vehicles are specifically designed to ensure easy boarding for all passengers, including those with reduced mobility. With more than 800 units sold across Europe since 2003, the Citylink platform is renowned for its low vibration, energy efficiency, and reliability. This new generation of vehicles will enhance passenger comfort, reduce maintenance needs, and deliver a smoother ride across Utah’s expanding TRAX network.

Jay Fox, Executive Director of UTA, emphasized the importance of the collaboration: “Working directly with Stadler’s Utah-based team gives us the unique ability to refine every aspect of production and ensure that our trains meet the highest operational standards. These vehicles represent the next chapter of TRAX—one focused on efficiency, accessibility, and the needs of Utah’s fast-growing communities.”

Since establishing its U.S. headquarters in Salt Lake City in 2016, Stadler has become a key player in North American rail manufacturing, employing more than 600 local workers and continuing to expand its operations to meet rising demand across the continent.

The official design and livery of the new TRAX trains will be showcased this week at the Utah Transportation Conference (October 28–30), offering the public a first look at the next generation of locally built light rail vehicles designed for Utah’s future.
