Scania strengthens off-road electrification portfolio with modular battery systems designed for extreme environments

(IN BRIEF) Scania has launched Scania Industrial Batteries, a new division dedicated to powering off-road and industrial applications such as mining, construction, and material handling. Following the acquisition of Northvolt Systems’ Industrial Division in April 2025, the new organization delivers modular battery solutions ranging from 21 to 624 kWh and up to 1000 V, available both as part of complete powertrains and stand-alone products. With production in Poland and R&D in Sweden, Scania Industrial Batteries builds on more than seven years of expertise and 12 million operating hours. Executives Gustaf Sundell and Elin Åkerström emphasized that the new offering combines Scania’s engineering depth with modular, high-performance design to accelerate electrification in some of the most demanding environments.

(PRESS RELEASE) SÖDERTÄLJE, 22-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Scania has strengthened its position in electrification with the launch of Scania Industrial Batteries, a new organization headquartered in Sweden and dedicated to powering off-road and industrial machinery in sectors such as mining, construction, and material handling. This development follows Scania’s acquisition and carve-out of Northvolt Systems’ Industrial Division in April 2025 and provides customers with a fully integrated battery solution now available on the market.

The company’s off-road portfolio now includes a comprehensive electrified system that combines battery packs, e-machines, connectivity, software, and dedicated service support—specifically engineered to handle the harsh conditions of demanding terrains. With two new product platforms, Core and Compact, Scania Industrial Battery packs cover energy needs ranging from 21 to 624 kWh and up to 1000 V. These solutions can be used as part of complete electric powertrains or as stand-alone products and are designed and manufactured in Europe.

The market for electrified off-road solutions is accelerating as industries increasingly prioritize cost savings, operational efficiency, and reduced emissions. Heavy-duty sectors such as mining and construction are at the forefront, where electrification provides both economic and environmental benefits. Scania is addressing these demands with a wide-ranging portfolio of electric powertrain components, developed in close collaboration with OEMs and operators to ensure reliability and performance in the toughest environments.

“With this new offering, we aim to lead the electrification of off-road applications and support our customers in making the transition to sustainable solutions,” said Gustaf Sundell, Executive Vice President and Head of Ventures and New Business at Scania. “By combining the agility and speed of our newly acquired company with Scania’s deep engineering expertise and global network, we are well-positioned to accelerate electrification in the most challenging terrains.”

The company’s electrification portfolio now spans buses, trucks, and off-road industrial applications, with new batteries fully compatible with Scania’s existing electric powertrain components. This compatibility enables faster development and deployment, helping OEMs and operators adopt advanced electric solutions more efficiently.

“Batteries are not just energy tanks; they’re critical systems that impact performance, efficiency, and uptime,” explained Elin Åkerström, CEO of Scania Industrial Batteries. “With our deep expertise in battery technologies, we support customers from concept and design through deployment and after-sales service. Customers can count on Scania to deliver reliable, high-performance, and sustainable solutions that keep their operations running in even the most demanding conditions.”

Scania Industrial Batteries is already leveraging its strong foundation, with production facilities in Gdańsk, Poland, and an R&D centre in Stockholm, Sweden. Building on more than seven years of experience, the division has delivered thousands of battery systems, achieving over 12 million operating hours in mining, construction, and agricultural equipment. Its modular and compact design ensures seamless integration across platforms, supporting everything from forklifts to excavators and paving the way for cleaner, more efficient off-road operations.
