Siemens Mobility Completes Delivery of 80 Vectron Locomotives to VR Group Strengthening Finland Rail Operations

(IN BRIEF) Siemens Mobility has finalized the delivery of 80 Vectron electric locomotives to VR Group, completing a major contract that introduced the first broad gauge Vectron fleet in Finland. The locomotives, designed to operate in extreme cold conditions, are now fully integrated into both passenger and freight services and have already accumulated around 72 million kilometers in operation. Manufactured in Germany and Austria, the fleet represents a significant investment in Finland’s rail infrastructure and supports improved reliability and efficiency. The project underscores Siemens Mobility’s expertise in delivering adaptable locomotive solutions for diverse operating environments, while further strengthening its global footprint with the widely adopted Vectron platform.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 24-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens Mobility has completed the delivery of 80 Vectron electric locomotives to VR Group, marking the conclusion of a major supply agreement originally signed in 2014. The final handover represents the full deployment of the Vectron platform on Finland’s broad gauge network and one of the most significant rolling stock investments in VR’s history at the time of the order.

The project introduced the first fleet of broad gauge Vectron locomotives for both passenger and freight operations in Finland. All units were delivered according to the agreed schedule and have since been fully integrated into VR Group’s rail operations.

Designed specifically for Finland’s challenging environment, the locomotives were engineered to operate reliably in extreme weather conditions, including temperatures as low as –40°C. The vehicles also meet the regulatory and operational requirements of Northern European rail systems, ensuring consistent performance across diverse service demands.

Manufacturing of the locomotives took place at Siemens Mobility’s facility in Munich, Germany, while bogie production was carried out in Graz, Austria. Over the course of the project, deliveries were phased to align with VR’s operational needs, allowing for gradual integration into the existing fleet.

The locomotives, designated as the Sr3 series, are now actively used across both passenger and heavy freight services. Since entering operation, the fleet has accumulated approximately 72 million kilometers, demonstrating its reliability and performance in real-world conditions.

The successful completion of the contract highlights Siemens Mobility’s ability to deliver complex rail projects that combine standardized platforms with customized adaptations for specific markets. The Vectron platform is designed for flexibility, enabling operation across various track gauges, climates, and regulatory environments.

Globally, Siemens Mobility has sold more than 2,900 Vectron locomotives to over 110 customers, with the fleet collectively covering around 1.35 billion kilometers. The platform has been approved for operation in 20 European countries, reinforcing its position as a widely adopted solution for modern rail transport.
