ORLEN Opens Fifth Public Hydrogen Refuelling Station in Piła and Strengthens Low-Emission Transport in Wielkopolska

ORLEN Opens Fifth Public Hydrogen Refuelling Station in Piła and Strengthens Low-Emission Transport in Wielkopolska

(IN BRIEF) ORLEN has opened its fifth publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling station in Poland in the city of Piła, providing low-emission fuel for both municipal buses and private vehicles. Under a supply agreement, ORLEN will deliver 219,000 kilograms of hydrogen to support the local transition to zero-emission transport, making the facility the second such station in the Wielkopolska Province alongside Poznań. The site operates 24/7, offers 350-bar and 700-bar dispensing, and can refuel up to 10 buses and 30 cars per day. Local transport authorities described the station as a key step toward sustainable mobility, while ORLEN framed it as part of a broader strategy to build a nationwide hydrogen infrastructure. The project forms part of the Clean Cities – Hydrogen Mobility in Poland initiative, backed by EU funding, and aligns with ORLEN’s plan to develop renewable hydrogen hubs, expand electrolyser capacity to around 1 GW by 2030, and produce more than 130,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually.

(PRESS RELEASE) PŁOCK, 2-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — ORLEN has inaugurated its fifth publicly available hydrogen refuelling facility in Poland, located in the city of Piła. The newly opened station will supply low-emission hydrogen to both the local municipal bus fleet and private vehicle users, marking another step in the company’s efforts to expand clean transport infrastructure across the country. Under a supply agreement with the municipal transport operator, ORLEN will deliver 219,000 kilograms of hydrogen, supporting the transition toward low-emission mobility in the region. The Piła site also represents the second hydrogen refuelling station in the Wielkopolska Province, complementing the existing facility in Poznań.

Jakub Lubiński, Head of ORLEN’s Hydrogen Technologies Office, emphasized that hydrogen plays a central role in the company’s decarbonisation strategy, particularly within public transport. He stated that expanding the hydrogen network responds to growing demand from local governments pursuing zero-emission transport solutions, including the City of Piła. According to Lubiński, the new station strengthens ORLEN’s regional hydrogen infrastructure and, together with the Poznań facility located just over 100 kilometres away, creates a foundation for broader deployment of low-emission transport across Wielkopolska.

The station, situated at ul. Powstańców Wielkopolskich 104, is equipped with two dispensers operating at 350 bar and 700 bar, enabling it to serve both buses and passenger cars. With a daily capacity of 480 kilograms of hydrogen, the facility can refuel up to 10 buses and 30 cars per day. It is accessible to the public around the clock, ensuring continuous availability for fleet and individual users alike.

Tadeusz Majewski, CEO of the Municipal Transport Company in Piła, described the opening of the hydrogen station as a milestone for sustainable urban mobility. He highlighted that the acquisition of five hydrogen buses, combined with the development of supporting infrastructure, represents a long-term investment in cleaner transport, improved passenger comfort, and greater energy security. Majewski also stressed the environmental benefits of reduced emissions and better air quality, thanking ORLEN for its close cooperation and support throughout the hydrogen bus procurement and infrastructure development process.

The hydrogen dispensed at the Piła station is produced at ORLEN Group facilities. The project was implemented under Phase II of the Clean Cities – Hydrogen Mobility in Poland initiative, which received more than EUR 2 million in funding from the CEF Transport Blending Facility. The subsequent Phase III of the programme foresees the construction of 16 additional hydrogen stations. In 2024, ORLEN secured a record EUR 62 million in non-repayable EU funding to accelerate this expansion, significantly strengthening the pace of hydrogen infrastructure development in Poland.

ORLEN is systematically building out its hydrogen refuelling network for both public and private transport. The company plans to develop a European system of hydrogen hubs powered by renewable energy, alongside innovative installations that convert municipal waste into zero- and low-emission hydrogen. ORLEN expects its total electrolyser capacity to reach approximately 1 GW by 2030, which, together with waste-to-hydrogen projects, should enable annual production of more than 130,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen by the end of the decade. This strategy includes hydrogen stations currently under development in Gdynia, Płock, Bielsko-Biała, and Gorzów Wielkopolski, with further sites being added along the Trans-European Transport Network to facilitate cross-border travel.

ORLEN’s publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling stations are already operational in Poznań, Katowice, Wałbrzych, and Włocławek, forming the core of the company’s growing national hydrogen network.
