(PRESS RELEASE) ROTTERDAM, 6-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a noteworthy effort to combat online shaming and the unauthorized sharing of intimate images, singer MEAU made a significant return to her former high school, Vechtstede College in Weesp. Her visit was part of the “Piece of Me” initiative, a collaboration with KPN aimed at addressing the serious issue of online shaming affecting Dutch youth. The campaign, driven by MEAU’s hit song ‘Stukje van Mij’, has successfully reached over 60 schools, sparking critical discussions about the impact of digital misconduct.

During her visit, MEAU, accompanied by expert Francien Regelink, engaged nearly 300 students in an informative session focused on the consequences of online shaming. The duo emphasized the importance of responsible digital behavior and encouraged students to think before sharing others’ content. MEAU expressed pride in the initiative’s impact, stating, “Our goal with ‘Stukje van Mij’ is to challenge victim-blaming and make this issue, affecting approximately 33,000 young people every six months, a topic of open discussion.”

In addition to school visits, KPN is offering over 60 free educational sessions on online shaming across Dutch secondary schools this year. For those unable to attend these sessions, further resources and practical advice are available at www.wtfff.nl. To support parents in addressing online shaming with their children, KPN, in collaboration with Fonds Slachtofferhulp, Soa Aids Rutgers, and Helpwanted, is hosting digital parent evenings on September 9 and 17. Parents can register for these webinars at overons.kpn/ouderavond.

The ‘Piece of Me’ initiative, bolstered by MEAU’s popular single and its viral success, has sparked a broader social conversation about online shaming. The campaign’s impact, reflected in substantial media coverage and legislative attention, underscores the pressing need for continued dialogue and education on this critical issue.
