(IN BRIEF) KfW IPEX-Bank has provided EUR 26 million in financing to Carisbrooke Shipping to support the construction of two modern, environmentally-friendly general cargo vessels. The project, backed by Dutch export credit insurance, contributes to the British company’s fleet renewal and commitment to sustainable maritime transport.

(PRESS RELEASE) FRANKFURT, 27-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — KfW IPEX-Bank has announced its support for Carisbrooke Shipping’s fleet renewal initiative with financing amounting to approximately EUR 26 million. This funding, which is covered by Atradius, the Dutch export credit insurance company, will assist in the construction of two advanced general cargo vessels for the UK-based shipping company. These vessels, being built at Thecla Bodewes Shipyards in the Netherlands, will help modernise and rejuvenate Carisbrooke’s fleet.

Carisbrooke Shipping, known for its fleet of multipurpose freighters and general cargo vessels, has ordered two identical 7,700 dwt ships from the reputable shipyard. The new vessels, part of the ‘Labrax’ series, will feature cutting-edge diesel-electric propulsion systems designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. In addition, their innovative bow shape is expected to contribute to a reduced carbon footprint. These ships are future-proofed with the possibility of converting their engines to use CO2-neutral liquid fuels, reflecting the company’s forward-thinking approach to sustainable maritime operations.

Scheduled for delivery in 2026, the new vessels will operate in the European short sea shipping market, enhancing Carisbrooke’s ability to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly freight transport solutions.

Andreas Ufer, Member of the Management Board of KfW IPEX-Bank, commented on the financing: “We are delighted to support Carisbrooke Shipping in this important European project. Our financing contributes to the renewal of its fleet, reinforcing our commitment to promoting sustainable and CO2-efficient shipping solutions for our customers.”

The new vessels are a part of Carisbrooke’s ongoing efforts to ensure the long-term sustainability of its operations, aligning with broader global goals to reduce emissions in the shipping industry.
