(PRESS RELEASE) BONN, 12-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Deutsche Telekom is advancing its commitment to sustainability by introducing nine principles for green artificial intelligence (AI). These guidelines aim to balance the environmental impact of AI, reducing energy and resource consumption while maximizing its benefits. The company is already using AI to improve energy efficiency in data centers and networks, optimizing processes such as cooling systems and antenna usage to reduce energy waste.

Claudia Nemat, Deutsche Telekom’s Board Member for Technology and Innovation, highlighted the company’s dedication to using AI responsibly. Since 2018, Deutsche Telekom has implemented ethical AI guidelines, and the new green AI principles further ensure that AI solutions are designed with sustainability in mind. These principles promote practices such as “green coding,” which minimizes energy use in software, and transparent reporting of AI’s CO2 footprint.

The company’s efforts are evident in various areas, from optimizing mobile network energy consumption to supporting environmental protection through AI-driven solutions. For example, Deutsche Telekom manages the European Union’s Copernicus program, which uses satellite data to identify potential environmental threats like heatwaves and floods.

Deutsche Telekom will also be hosting discussions on sustainability and AI at the upcoming DIGITAL X 2024 event in Cologne, where industry experts will explore the future of green AI.
