(PRESS RELEASE) BONN, 29-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Deutsche Telekom and Kunstmuseum Bonn have collaborated to establish the Human AI Art Award, a new annual prize recognizing artists who explore the intersection of visual arts and advanced technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). The first recipient of this award, which includes a €10,000 cash prize, is American artist Lauren Lee McCarthy. Her pioneering work, “LAUREN,” will be showcased in a site-specific installation titled “LAUREN: Anyone home?” at Kunstmuseum Bonn starting November 17, 2024.

Lauren Lee McCarthy’s project involves a week-long observation of participants through a network of remote-controlled devices, where she interacts with them as a virtual assistant, blending the boundaries between human empathy and AI-driven interactions. The installation highlights the complexities and ethical considerations surrounding AI’s role in our daily lives.

Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Höttges emphasized the significance of art in addressing societal concerns about AI, stating that such artistic endeavors can offer new perspectives on the impact of technology. Kunstmuseum Bonn’s Director, Prof. Dr. Stephan Berg, echoed this sentiment, noting the museum’s interest in exploring the realities created by modern technologies.

The award was decided by a distinguished panel of judges from the international art scene, who selected McCarthy for her innovative approach in encouraging critical reflection on our relationship with technology. The exhibition will be housed in a specially designed Human AI Art Space, allowing visitors to engage with the artwork and experience the intersection of human interaction and AI firsthand.
