Destatis: Air passengers departing to foreign destinations from German airports 2015 up 4.3% on 2014

WIESBADEN, 09-Mar-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the International Tourism Exchange 2016 (ITB) starting on the 09 March 2016 in Berlin the number of air passengers departing to foreign destinations from German airports 2015 amounted to 85.1 million passengers (+4.3% on 2014). With this figure a new record-high was reached. Compared with the two preceding years this result reflects a higher growth as the corresponding changes-rates amounted to 3.4 and 2.0%.

European airports were the destination of 63.4 million passengers (+4.1%). This value reflects about three quarters of the whole outbound passenger traffic from Germany.

To America (+2.3%) 9.0 million passengers travelled from Germany. An above average growth of 10.0% was registered for the Carribean Islands.

Asia presented with an increase of 8.1% a significantly above average growth rate thus overtaking for the first time passenger flows to America.

Africa (+3.8%) showed a below average increase. The mainly by tourists frequented airport of Hurghada in Egypt grew by more than a fifth (+21.6%) whereas in Tunisia
(–35.6%) plunges especially also for the mainly for tourism services used airports of Endfidha (–47.8%) and Djerba (–45.9%) were observed.

Methodological hint:
Because of the tourism oriented background of this press release the figures are referring to final destination passengers. This is the first destination in case of a direct flight and the second one in case of using an additional connecting airport. The data are not corresponding with the results of other publications with a focus mainly on the first destination of a passenger.
