Continental’s Korbach Plant Secures ISCC PLUS Certification, Paving the Way for a Sustainable Tire Future

Continental tire plant in Korbach receives internationally recognized sustainability certification ISCC PLUS.

(IN BRIEF) Continental’s Korbach tire facility in Hanover has earned the ISCC PLUS certification, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable production by rigorously documenting and tracking the use of renewable and recycled materials. By implementing a mass balance approach, the company is steadily increasing the proportion of sustainable inputs in its tires, targeting over 40% by 2030 and 100% sustainable materials in all new tires by 2050. This certification bolsters the performance of its super-elastic solid tires for material handling and intralogistics, which help reduce energy consumption and extend the range of electric forklifts. Klaus Framenau, Head of the Material Handling Tire business, highlighted that this step makes their sustainability efforts transparent and reinforces their environmental commitment.

(PRESS RELEASE) HANOVER, 10-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Continental’s tire plant in Korbach has achieved a major milestone by earning the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS, an accolade that highlights the company’s commitment to sustainable production practices. This certification confirms that the facility meets rigorous documentation requirements for using renewable and recycled raw materials, ensuring full traceability throughout the production process. By adopting a mass balance approach—which involves blending fossil, renewable, and recycled inputs while tracking their proportional use along the entire value chain—Continental is steadily increasing the share of sustainable materials in its tire products. The ultimate goal is to incorporate more than 40 percent renewable and recycled materials in its tires by 2030 and to manufacture all new tires entirely from sustainable sources by 2050.

At the Korbach facility, this achievement is particularly significant for the production of super-elastic solid tires designed for material handling and intralogistics applications. These high-performance tires, known for their low rolling resistance, not only help reduce energy consumption but also extend the operating range of electric forklifts and other industrial vehicles. Klaus Framenau, Head of the Material Handling Tire business at Continental, remarked, “We want to make our sustainability activities transparent because we aim to gradually increase the proportion of renewable and recycled materials in our material handling tires. Certifications like ISCC PLUS underline our commitment to making the future of intralogistics even more environmentally friendly.”

The ISCC, established in 2010 by a multi-stakeholder initiative, is globally recognized for promoting traceable, sustainable, deforestation-free, and climate-friendly supply chains. Continental’s recent certification represents a significant step in its broader sustainability journey, which also involves integrating innovative raw materials—ranging from agricultural waste like rice hull ash to sustainable carbon black and recycled steel—into tire manufacturing. This move not only supports the company’s ambitious environmental targets but also enhances the performance and durability of its products.
