ANDRITZ Secures Major Pumped Storage Contract from Tata Power to Support India’s Renewable Energy Expansion

Contract signing between Tata Power and ANDRITZ Hydropower

(IN BRIEF) ANDRITZ has been awarded a significant contract by Tata Power to supply equipment for the 1,000 MW Bhivpuri pumped storage plant in Maharashtra, India. The project, valued in the low three-digit million euro range, includes the delivery of advanced pump turbines, motor-generators, and related systems, along with full project execution services. Designed to support the increasing share of renewable energy, the facility will enhance grid stability and provide critical energy storage capacity. The project marks the first major pumped storage collaboration between ANDRITZ and Tata Power and highlights the growing importance of storage infrastructure in India’s energy transition. ANDRITZ is also involved in multiple other pumped storage projects in the country, reinforcing its role in supporting sustainable and resilient energy systems.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 18-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — ANDRITZ has secured a major contract from Tata Power to supply key equipment for the 1,000 MW Bhivpuri pumped storage project in Maharashtra, India, marking a significant step in the expansion of large-scale energy storage infrastructure in the country. The order, valued in the low three-digit million euro range, will be recorded in the company’s first-quarter 2026 intake.

As part of the agreement, ANDRITZ will deliver three advanced reversible pump turbines, along with motor-generators and the associated electromechanical systems. The scope covers the full lifecycle of the equipment, including engineering, production, installation, testing, and commissioning. The project will draw on ANDRITZ’s manufacturing capabilities within India, supported by its global engineering expertise and project execution network.

The Bhivpuri facility is designed to support the rapid growth of renewable energy in Maharashtra by providing critical storage capacity and enhancing grid stability. As solar and wind generation continue to expand, pumped storage systems are increasingly essential to balance fluctuations in supply and demand and ensure a reliable electricity supply.

By storing excess energy during periods of low demand and releasing it when needed, pumped storage plants play a key role in maintaining grid resilience and enabling higher penetration of renewable energy sources. Once operational, the Bhivpuri project is expected to strengthen the region’s energy infrastructure and contribute to a more stable and sustainable power system.

Ravindra G, Regional Executive and Managing Director & CEO of ANDRITZ Hydropower India, highlighted the importance of energy storage in supporting the transition to renewable energy, noting that advanced pumped storage solutions are vital for building resilient and low-carbon energy systems.

Tata Power, one of India’s leading integrated energy companies, continues to expand its clean energy portfolio through investments in storage technologies. The company has been developing expertise in pumped hydro storage as part of its strategy to provide reliable, dispatchable renewable energy at scale. By integrating storage with renewable generation, Tata Power aims to improve grid performance and support India’s transition to a low-carbon energy future.

The Bhivpuri project represents the first large-scale pumped storage collaboration between ANDRITZ and Tata Power, strengthening the partnership between the two companies.

ANDRITZ is currently involved in seven pumped storage projects across India, with a combined capacity exceeding 11 gigawatts. These projects reflect the company’s focus on delivering technologies that enable energy transition and support the development of sustainable power systems in rapidly growing markets.
