(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 20-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Visa has introduced Visa Intelligent Authorisation (VIA) in Europe, marking a significant step toward modernising payment processing for acquirers and strengthening the resilience of payment infrastructure across the region. Built on the Visa Acceptance Platform, the new capability enables banks and financial institutions that process merchant payments to upgrade their systems through a single API integration, removing the need for complex and costly infrastructure overhauls.

To accelerate adoption, Visa is working with a group of leading acquirers including Comercia Global Payments, Elavon, Fiserv, UNICRE, and Worldline, aiming to enhance payment processing performance and efficiency across European markets.

Addressing Limitations of Legacy Authorisation Systems

Authorisation plays a central role in digital payments, as acquirers transmit transaction requests through card networks to issuing banks, which respond within seconds to approve or decline payments. However, traditional authorisation systems often struggle to keep pace with growing transaction volumes and increasing data complexity, which can lead to unnecessary declines, higher operational costs, and restricted innovation.

Visa Intelligent Authorisation addresses these challenges by offering a unified processing capability that supports transactions across major card networks through a single connection. The platform delivers a 99.999 percent uptime and achieves an average approval rate of 96.3 percent globally, positioning it among the leading solutions in the industry. It can function either as a primary processing system or as an extension to existing infrastructure.

The solution incorporates a machine learning engine that evaluates transaction data in real time, enabling optimised routing decisions based on network requirements, regulatory frameworks, and industry programs. It also provides near real-time visibility into authorisation outcomes, alongside instant risk alerts and a centralised management portal equipped with analytics tools to support monitoring, settlement, and compliance.

Enabling the Next Generation of Payments Innovation

As digital commerce continues to evolve, the need for modern processing systems has become increasingly critical. The growth of digital wallets, stablecoins, and emerging commerce models such as agent-driven transactions is contributing to both higher transaction volumes and more complex payment flows.

Recent research highlights the speed of this transformation, with mobile payments now accounting for 59 percent of all e-commerce transactions in Europe. This share is projected to increase to 75 percent by 2030, underscoring the importance of scalable and adaptable infrastructure.

Visa Intelligent Authorisation is designed to help acquirers respond to these shifts by providing a more flexible and resilient processing environment that supports current payment trends while preparing for future developments.

Industry Collaboration Driving Adoption

Comercia Global Payments emphasised that its collaboration with Visa strengthens its ability to deliver tailored, high-performance solutions that improve payment efficiency, security, and resilience for merchants operating in increasingly demanding environments.

Fiserv highlighted the importance of modern infrastructure in reducing friction, improving approval rates, and enabling innovation for both merchants and financial institutions, noting that solutions like VIA play a key role in advancing payment capabilities across Europe.

UNICRE outlined its strategic focus on international expansion, pointing to its collaboration with Visa as a way to combine local market expertise with innovative acceptance technologies. The partnership is intended to support businesses with secure, scalable, and forward-looking payment solutions that facilitate growth in global markets.

Worldline also underscored the benefits of the initiative, noting that enhanced authorisation capabilities will support faster approvals, reduce fraud risks, and enable merchants to expand into new customer segments, including e-commerce platforms, subscription-based services, and digital marketplaces.

Strengthening the Future of Payment Processing

With Visa Intelligent Authorisation now available in Europe, the company is positioning the solution as a foundation for more efficient, secure, and scalable payment processing. By simplifying integration and improving performance, the platform is expected to help acquirers better support the evolving demands of digital commerce while maintaining high levels of reliability and operational resilience.
