Ingka Group Accelerates Growth Strategy as IKEA Opens Compact Store in Beijing and Expands Worldwide

(IN BRIEF) Ingka Group has expanded IKEA’s presence in China with the opening of its first small-format store in eastern Beijing, located in the Wangfujing WellTown shopping centre in Tongzhou District. The 1,500 m² store offers over 3,000 products and personalised home planning services, reflecting insights into local living needs. This marks IKEA’s fifth store in Beijing and follows a recent small-format opening in Shenzhen. Globally, Ingka Group has opened 21 new locations so far in 2026 across Europe, North America, and Asia, using a mix of store formats to better serve diverse markets. The expansion includes new stores in US cities like Huntsville and Phoenix, an upcoming Los Angeles location, and a partnership with Best Buy. Additional openings in India and Europe, along with new planning points in Sweden and Croatia, demonstrate the company’s efforts to reach both urban and remote customers. The growth strategy is backed by a EUR 5 billion investment plan aimed at strengthening IKEA’s retail network and improving accessibility across its 32 markets.

(PRESS RELEASE) LEIDEN, 30-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Ingka Group has continued to expand its footprint in China with the launch of a new compact-format IKEA store in eastern Beijing, marking the company’s first small store in that part of the city. Located in the Wangfujing WellTown shopping centre in Tongzhou District, the 1,500-square-metre retail space welcomed large crowds on opening day and brings the IKEA concept closer to millions of residents in the Chinese capital.

The newly opened outlet, which becomes IKEA’s fifth location in Beijing, has been designed around insights into how people in the city live and what they need to enhance everyday life at home. Customers can explore more than 3,000 home furnishing products, access personalised planning consultations with in-store specialists, and enjoy a curated food offering tailored to the local market.

According to Pontus Erntell, CEO of IKEA China, Beijing remains a priority market for the company. The latest opening follows closely on the heels of a similar small-format launch in Shenzhen and reflects a broader ambition to bring IKEA’s offerings closer to urban communities. Alongside physical expansion, the company is also continuing to strengthen its digital presence to reach more customers across the country.

The Beijing store forms part of a wider global rollout strategy led by Ingka Group. Since the beginning of 2026, the retailer has opened 21 new locations worldwide, spanning multiple formats that range from compact urban stores to larger retail spaces exceeding 4,000 square metres. These new sites have been introduced across Europe, North America, and Asia, with additional openings already planned in the months ahead.

Javier Quiñones, Global Commercial Manager at Ingka Group, highlighted the importance of adapting store formats to meet diverse customer needs, noting that flexibility in how IKEA presents its offer is becoming increasingly essential. By developing a mix of store sizes and formats, the company aims to remain accessible and relevant in a variety of markets.

Recent expansion highlights include IKEA’s first store in Huntsville, Alabama, new small-format locations in Phoenix, Arizona, and an upcoming city store in Los Angeles scheduled to open on May 2. In the United States, IKEA has also begun collaborating with Best Buy, introducing its products and services through selected partner stores in Florida and Texas. Additional openings have taken place in cities such as Pune in India, Cagliari in Italy, and Girona in Spain, further strengthening IKEA’s global presence.

The company is also extending its reach to smaller and more remote locations. On the Swedish island of Gotland, customers in Visby can now design their homes and place orders through a dedicated planning point, while in Pula, Croatia, a similar concept offers both planning services and a selection of products available for immediate purchase.

This ongoing expansion is supported by Ingka Group’s EUR 5 billion investment programme, which spans three years and is focused on opening new locations while enhancing existing ones across its 32 operating markets. Through this strategy, the company aims to improve accessibility, strengthen customer engagement, and continue evolving its retail experience worldwide.
