VAG Nuremberg Expands Electric Bus Fleet with 31 New Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G Articulated Buses

(IN BRIEF) VAG Nuremberg has expanded its electric bus fleet with the addition of 31 Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G articulated buses, marking the 100th electric bus in its fleet. The new fleet, which makes up nearly 70% of the company’s total bus fleet, offers improved passenger comfort, advanced safety features, and energy-efficient performance. VAG’s long-term goal is to transition its entire bus fleet to CO2-free electric vehicles by the early 2030s.

(PRESS RELEASE) LEINFELDEN-ECHTERDINGEN/NUREMBERG, 9-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — VAG Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg (VAG Nuremberg) has reached a significant milestone in its electric bus initiative with the arrival of 31 new battery-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G articulated buses. The fleet expansion includes the hundredth electric bus in VAG’s fleet, an eCitaro G articulated model, which features four doors for improved accessibility. These new buses are set to enhance the public transport experience in Bavaria’s second-largest city.

The new eCitaro G buses are part of an ongoing effort to increase the number of electric buses in VAG Nuremberg’s fleet, now comprising 77 electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro and eCitaro G buses. The new additions bring the fleet’s electric bus share to nearly 70%, reinforcing VAG Nuremberg’s commitment to sustainable public transportation.

Innovative Technology for a Sustainable Future

Each eCitaro G articulated bus is equipped with seven battery packs, offering a total energy capacity of 686 kWh, which allows the buses to cover up to 300 kilometers on a single charge under typical operating conditions. The buses will be charged at the eBus port at VAG’s Schweinau site, where a photovoltaic system powers the charging infrastructure, allowing up to 39 electric buses to charge simultaneously.

The fleet features cutting-edge safety systems, including LED headlights, rain/light sensors, and a reversing camera. The vehicles also come with advanced driver assistance systems, such as Preventive Brake Assist 2, Sideguard Assist 2, and Frontguard Assist, which provide additional safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The buses are equipped with the latest in comfort, including high-performance particle filters with antiviral layers, ensuring cleaner air for both drivers and passengers.

Passenger Comfort and Accessibility

Inside, the buses offer 37 seats in the City Star Eco seating variant by Mercedes-Benz, with a roof-mounted air conditioning system equipped with a CO2 heat pump for enhanced passenger comfort. Additionally, two areas for wheelchairs and prams are included, along with a folding ramp for easy access. For added convenience, passengers have access to USB charging sockets and large infotainment screens.

The buses also feature multiple safety cameras monitoring the interior and entrance doors, enhancing passenger security. The buses are equipped with Bus Data Centres as standard, providing seamless integration with digital connectivity services from Omniplus.

Commitment to Sustainable Transport

VAG Nuremberg’s goal is to convert its entire fleet to CO2-free, battery-electric buses by the early 2030s. Currently, over half of the bus fleet is electric, with green electricity sourced regionally to power the electric buses. The company was recently awarded the Bavarian State Prize for Transport and Logistics in the “Passenger Transport” category for its innovative “eBus to Grid” project.
