Sweden opens Embassy in Tunisia

STOCKHOLM, 26-Oct-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — Minister for Foreign Affairs Margot Wallström will visit Tunisia on 25–26 October for the official inauguration of Sweden’s Embassy in Tunisia. During her visit Ms Wallström will meet with President Beji Caid Essebsi, Minister of Foreign Affairs Khemaies Jhinaoui, and representatives of civil society and Swedish businesses in Tunisia. The Embassy is also accredited for Libya and Ms Wallström will meet with Libyan representatives.

Swedish–Tunisian bilateral relations have been strengthened since the State Visit by Tunisia’s President Beji Caid Essebsi to Sweden in November 2015 and the Swedish Government’s subsequent decision to re-establish an embassy in Tunis. The first meeting of the Ministerial Forum, as envisaged in the Memorandum of Understanding signed during the State Visit, will take place during the visit and will include bilateral cooperation on political and trade matters. Ms Wallström will also voice Sweden’s support for Tunisia’s democratic consolidation in the face of the broad challenges that remain.
