Statement by the spokesperson of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on the bombing at the University of Aleppo and the mass killing of women and children in Homs, Syria

Brussels, 18-1-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

“The High Representative is deeply shocked by the attack at the campus of the University of Aleppo that killed more than 80 persons and injured over 150. It is all the more appalling as the victims are civilians, mostly students sitting their exams at university or displaced persons accommodated at the campus. This horrific event was followed by another in the city of Homs, which again targeted
civilians, including women and children. Reports indicate that there were around 100 civilian casualties.

The High Representative condemns these two attacks in the strongest terms. She underlines the need to investigate the tragic events and to hold the perpetrators accountable. She expresses her sincere condolence to the families of the victims.

The violence in Syria has reached completely unacceptable levels and has caused suffering to millions of Syrian people. The High Representative reiterates that bringing an end to the repression and violence in Syria is an absolute priority.”
