Skanska Secures €252M Contract for Green Tram Depot Project in Helsinki

The 41,000-square-meter facility will house and service up to 50 trams, with provisions for maintenance, cleaning, and repairs. The project, set to begin construction in early 2025 and finish by mid-2029, is being delivered by an alliance consortium including Skanska, Sweco, Sipti Infra, Rejlers, and Arkkitehtityöhuone APRT. The depot is designed to meet ambitious environmental goals, aiming for BREEAM Outstanding certification, focusing on sustainability, energy efficiency, and waste management.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 4-Dec-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Skanska has secured a contract with City Transport Ltd to construct a modern tram depot in Helsinki, Finland. Valued at €252 million (approximately SEK 2.9 billion), the project will be included in Skanska’s Nordic order bookings for the fourth quarter of 2024.

Spanning 41,000 square meters, the new depot will accommodate around 50 trams, providing facilities for their daily maintenance, cleaning, and repair. The project will be delivered by an alliance consortium led by Skanska, which includes City Transport Ltd, Sweco, Sipti Infra, Rejlers, and Arkkitehtityöhuone APRT.

The depot will set new environmental standards, aiming for the prestigious BREEAM Outstanding certification. This globally recognized standard focuses on minimizing the carbon footprint, optimizing energy and resource efficiency, and maximizing waste recycling.

Construction is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2025, with project completion anticipated by the second quarter of 2029.
