SFE Awards ANDRITZ Major Contract for New Øksenelvane Hydropower Plant in Norway

(IN BRIEF) SFE has awarded ANDRITZ a contract to supply advanced electromechanical equipment for the new Øksenelvane hydropower plant, which will significantly increase clean energy production in Norway. The project is set to play a key role in supporting Norway’s renewable energy expansion, with the new facility expected to generate 21 GWh more annually than the existing plant.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 22-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Sogn og Fjordane Energi (SFE), a prominent renewable energy supplier in Western Norway, has awarded ANDRITZ a significant contract through its subsidiary Firdakraft AS for the supply of cutting-edge electromechanical equipment for the new Øksenelvane hydropower plant in Bremanger municipality. This new facility will be built alongside the existing Øksenelvane power plant, which will be decommissioned after over 70 years of service.

The scope of the contract includes engineering, manufacturing, and supply of advanced equipment, as well as its installation, testing, and commissioning at the project site. ANDRITZ will provide two state-of-the-art Pelton turbines, each with a capacity of 55 MW, along with associated turbine governors, main inlet valves, penstocks, cooling systems, generators, auxiliary equipment, excitation systems with transformers, and comprehensive automation and monitoring systems. The value of the contract has not been disclosed.

The new Øksenelvane hydropower plant is expected to generate 171 GWh of clean energy annually, an increase of 21 GWh compared to the current plant. The Pelton turbines are specifically designed to support grid stability and offer essential grid services, which played a crucial role in securing this contract.

Scheduled for completion by 2028, the Øksenelvane project will contribute significantly to SFE’s goal of expanding renewable energy production in Norway. Currently, SFE generates 2.4 TWh of renewable electricity each year, powering approximately 130,000 households across the country.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with SFE on this important hydropower project and are committed to supporting Norway’s transition to a sustainable energy future,” said Kjetil Toverud, Managing Director of ANDRITZ Hydro AS in Norway. “The Øksenelvane project exemplifies ANDRITZ’s dedication to providing high-performance hydropower solutions that promote clean energy and grid stability.”
