(PRESS RELEASE) OBAN, 24-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — SAMS has appointed marine biologist Professor Liz Cottier-Cook as Associate Director for Science and External Engagement, strengthening the senior leadership team at the Oban-based marine research institute. Professor Cottier-Cook, who has been associated with SAMS since 1996 through both study and research, will focus on expanding national and international partnerships and enhancing the organisation’s scientific and educational impact.

In her new role, Professor Cottier-Cook will support the development of SAMS’ research collaborations and external relationships with a wide range of partners. These include United Nations agencies, UK and Scottish government bodies, UHI and universities worldwide, as well as non-governmental organisations and commercial and financial partners. She will also contribute to mentoring initiatives designed to support early-career researchers and encourage the development of new collaborative opportunities at both national and international levels.

Professor Cottier-Cook’s research has focused in recent years on marine invasive non-native species, and she has led international projects aimed at promoting sustainability within the global seaweed farming sector. Her work has contributed to the development of environmental policy at the United Nations level and has helped support the long-term protection of natural seaweed resources.

Alongside her research activities, she leads the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters programme in Aquaculture, Environment and Society (ACES-STAR), an internationally recognised postgraduate programme focused on sustainable aquaculture and marine environmental management.

Professor Cottier-Cook expressed enthusiasm for the new position, highlighting her commitment to supporting SAMS’ research strengths and increasing the organisation’s global engagement. She emphasised the importance of strengthening partnerships and ensuring that the institute’s research continues to deliver meaningful scientific and educational outcomes.

SAMS Director Professor Nick Owens welcomed the appointment, noting Professor Cottier-Cook’s extensive experience and long-standing connection with the institute. He highlighted her international reputation and the influence of her work on global seaweed policy, as well as her ability to inspire and support the next generation of marine scientists.

Professor Cottier-Cook’s appointment is expected to enhance SAMS’ global engagement while supporting the institute’s continued development as a leading centre for marine science research and education.
