RWE Expands Italian Onshore Wind Portfolio with 93 MW Award in Renewables Auction

(IN BRIEF) RWE has secured a total of 93 MW of onshore wind capacity in Italy, winning contracts for two wind farm projects through the latest renewables auction. The projects include the 45 MW Venusia wind farm in Basilicata and the 48 MW Serra Palino wind farm in Apulia, with construction scheduled to commence in the latter half of 2025 and commissioning expected in 2026. These developments are part of RWE Renewables Italia’s expansive portfolio, which currently includes 16 onshore wind farms generating 527 MW of capacity and powering around 450,000 households. Along with these new projects, RWE is also advancing other renewable initiatives, including a recently commissioned solar plant in Sicily and additional wind and Agri-PV projects in Apulia and Campania. The CEO, Katja Wünschel, emphasized the strategic importance of onshore wind for Italy’s energy transition and the company’s commitment to a clean and stable energy future.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN/ ROME, 26-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has been awarded a total of 93 MW of onshore wind capacity in Italy following the latest renewables auction. The award comprises two wind farm projects: the 45 MW Venusia wind farm, to be developed in the province of Potenza within the Basilicata region, and the 48 MW Serra Palino wind farm, located in the province of Foggia in the Apulia region. Both projects are slated to break ground in the second half of 2025, with full commissioning anticipated in 2026.

Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, stated, “Onshore wind is a cornerstone of Italy’s energy transition and a key element of RWE’s expansion strategy. With these new projects, we are further bolstering our already robust portfolio of Italian onshore wind assets. We eagerly anticipate the realization of the Venusia and Serra Palino wind farms as significant milestones on our journey toward a cleaner, more stable, and cost-effective energy future for Italy.”

RWE Renewables Italia continues to solidify its dominant position in Italy’s renewables market by employing an integrated approach that spans project development, construction, operation, and the marketing of wind and solar energy assets. Currently, RWE operates 16 onshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 527 MW, supplying green electricity to approximately 450,000 Italian households annually. In addition, the company recently commissioned its first Italian solar plant, Bosco (8.3 MWac), in Sicily. Alongside the upcoming Venusia and Serra Palino wind farms, RWE is also in the process of constructing the 53 MW Mondonuovo wind farm in Apulia and its first commercial-scale Agri-PV plants—Morcone (9.8 MWac) and Acquafredda (9.3 MWac)—in the Campania region.
