Pint of Science Returns to Exeter with Robots, Regeneration, and a National Pub Quiz Showdown

(IN BRIEF) This May, Exeter will host the 12th edition of Pint of Science, a national festival that brings research into local pubs. From 19–21 May, scientists from the University of Exeter and the Met Office will present talks across city venues like the Bootlegger and White Hart Hotel on diverse topics such as regenerative insects, using genetics to improve medical diagnoses, and robots that assist in cancer detection. Attendees can also join a nationwide pub quiz running simultaneously in multiple cities. Organised by volunteers, the festival offers an accessible and engaging way for the public to explore cutting-edge science. Tickets are now available for £5.

(PRESS RELEASE) EXETER, 23-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Some of Exeter’s most iconic pubs are set to transform into lively science hubs this May as the Pint of Science festival returns with three nights of engaging talks, interactive demos, and a nationwide pub quiz challenge.

Taking place from 19–21 May, the 12th edition of the UK-wide festival invites researchers out of their labs and into local venues for fascinating conversations that mix cutting-edge science with the casual comfort of the pub. This year, Exeter’s event will unfold across popular spots including the Bootlegger, the City Gate, and the White Hart Hotel.

Local researchers from the University of Exeter and the Met Office will share their insights on a wide array of topics, ranging from genetic sequencing in newborns and how DNA can help tackle health inequalities in diabetes diagnosis, to the astounding regenerative abilities of insects and how robotics could support early detection of bowel cancer. Talks will be paired with live experiments, demonstrations, and lively discussions.

In a new twist, Exeter audiences will also compete in the UK’s biggest multi-city pub quiz, going head-to-head with science fans across the country.

Dr Harry Green, who is leading the Exeter Pint of Science team, said: “It’s exciting to see world-class science made accessible through these events.
