Nordlänk RSQ: Telia’s Mobile Network Rescue Unit Ready to Operate Anywhere in Sweden

(IN BRIEF) Telia, in partnership with the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS), has unveiled the Nordlänk RSQ, a fully operational prototype vehicle designed to sustain and restore telecommunications during nationwide outages or emergencies. Modular and rapidly deployable, the unit supports up to five people, carries its own power supply, and uses drones for network maintenance and situational awareness. Staffan Åkesson of Telia Sweden emphasized the importance of public-private collaboration to standardize and expand this solution. This project builds on prior PTS-backed work, including hydrogen-based trials that dramatically extended mobile base station uptime.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 23-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Telia has introduced the Nordlänk RSQ, an innovative prototype command-and-control vehicle engineered to maintain communications during major crises. Supported by the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS), this self-sufficient unit can be deployed anywhere across Sweden to bolster network resilience amid widespread service outages or power failures.

Designed with a modular architecture, the Nordlänk RSQ is swiftly configurable for diverse critical missions—whether restoring damaged networks, serving as a mobile operations hub, or reinforcing emergency response efforts. The vehicle, which carries up to five personnel, incorporates its own power generation systems and onboard drones for rapid situational assessment and repairs.

Staffan Åkesson, Head of Infrastructure at Telia Sweden, noted: “Although this is still a prototype, Nordlänk RSQ is already fully functional and poised to enhance the robustness of Telia’s network. True national preparedness hinges on innovation and collaboration between public and private entities. Working with PTS, we envision scaling this solution and potentially deploying multiple vehicles to strengthen the telecom sector’s crisis-response capabilities.”

The Nordlänk RSQ initiative is part of Telia’s broader commitment to safeguarding Sweden’s critical infrastructure through the Nationella telesamverksansgruppen—a public-private cooperation forum. Previous resilience efforts include trials using hydrogen fuel cells to extend mobile base station uptime from four hours to 110 days during simulated power failures.
