Finnish Property Owners to Benefit from Telia and Danfoss Leanheat’s Innovative Heating Optimization

(IN BRIEF) Telia and Danfoss Leanheat have teamed up to introduce an innovative heating optimization solution in Finland. By installing Telia’s Indoor Climate Monitoring sensors in apartments, gathering indoor data, and connecting it to a cloud service for analysis, the system can automatically optimize building heating based on various factors, including weather forecasts and historical consumption data. This partnership aims to reduce energy consumption in Finnish homes by up to 10%, offering potential savings of up to 20% in ideal conditions. The initiative addresses the pressing need for more sustainable and energy-efficient buildings, as buildings currently account for 40% of energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 29-Jan-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Telia Company AB (STO: TELIA), a Swedish multinational telecommunications company and mobile network operator, and Danfoss Leanheat have embarked on an innovative partnership in Finland to pioneer a cutting-edge heating optimization solution, poised to empower Finnish property owners to slash their buildings’ energy consumption by up to 10 percent, with some properties achieving an impressive 20 percent reduction under optimal conditions.

Danfoss Leanheat, a smart building solutions provider, already boasts a district heating optimization service utilized in 200,000 Finnish apartments. Through their collaborative efforts, Telia and Danfoss Leanheat aspire to extend these energy-saving benefits to over a million Finnish households. The novel solution involves the deployment of Telia’s Indoor Climate Monitoring sensors in each apartment, meticulously gathering temperature and humidity data. These sensors are seamlessly linked to a cloud service, facilitating the storage, analysis, and visualization of collected data through a user portal. This indoor climate data, when combined with weather forecasts, external temperature information, and historical heating consumption data, automatically fine-tunes the building’s heating system. Telia Heating Optimization simplifies and streamlines district heating management, ensuring it is both user-friendly and cost-effective.

Kimmo Ahvenlampi, Telia’s IoT specialist, underscores the substantial potential of Telia Heating Optimization in Finland, referencing data from Motiva, a state-owned Finnish company dedicated to promoting energy and materials’ efficient and sustainable utilization.

“Motiva reports that a staggering three-quarters of Finland’s residential building stock lacks proper regulation,” says Ahvenlampi. “Our joint service essentially functions as the building’s very own artificial intelligence, optimizing energy consumption and generating valuable data. This data empowers users to take informed actions, continually enhancing both energy efficiency and tenant comfort.”

Lauri Hiekkanen, Sales Manager at Danfoss Leanheat in Finland, anticipates multiple benefits arising from energy optimization.

“With energy optimization, housing associations can promptly initiate savings on heating energy while concurrently amassing data to support additional energy-saving initiatives,” Hiekkanen highlights. “Telia’s strong presence within housing associations is invaluable for achieving reduced energy consumption, contributing to more sustainable building operations.”

The European Union has estimated that buildings account for a substantial 40 percent of energy consumption and 36 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.

“Optimizing energy consumption is pivotal for cities and property owners, especially given fluctuating energy prices and more stringent climate targets,” adds Ahvenlampi. “Buildings play a pivotal role in driving urban sustainability, and Telia is thrilled to be part of this transformative solution.”
