New ANDRITZ acid recovery plant to support sustainability and capacity growth at Tata Steel Port Talbot

New ANDRITZ acid recovery plant to support sustainability and capacity growth at Tata Steel Port Talbot

(IN BRIEF) Tata Steel has awarded ANDRITZ a contract to supply an acid regeneration plant for its Port Talbot Works in Wales, supporting a major capacity increase in the site’s pickling line. The new facility, due for commissioning in late 2027, will regenerate up to 6,340 liters of waste acid per hour, enabling maximum reuse and reducing reliance on external acid supply. The technology will function efficiently at current and future production levels, cutting waste and emissions. The system includes advanced off-gas cleaning, ECOmode energy-saving capability, high automation, and cybersecurity features. The project has been recorded in ANDRITZ’s Q4 2025 order intake.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 9-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — ANDRITZ has been selected by Tata Steel to deliver a new acid regeneration plant for the company’s Port Talbot Works in Wales, supporting the steelmaker’s planned expansion of its pickling operations while meeting stringent environmental performance standards. The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in late 2027 and will enable sustainable handling and recycling of spent acid from the production process.

The contract value was not disclosed but has been booked within ANDRITZ’s order intake for the fourth quarter of 2025. Once operational, the system will be capable of regenerating up to 6,340 liters of waste acid per hour, allowing most of the recovered acid to be reused on-site and significantly reducing waste and transport needs. The unit will operate efficiently at both the current pickling line capacity of 1.2 million metric tons per year and the future expanded capacity of 1.8 million mtpy.

Paul Boxer, Project Manager at Tata Steel, emphasized the environmental benefits:
“The new plant will eliminate the need for importing large volumes of fresh acid and exporting waste streams. This represents a major move toward decarbonizing our pickling operations.”

The facility will feature ANDRITZ’s latest exhaust cleaning and emission control systems, designed to operate well below regulatory thresholds. The integrated ECOmode function will enhance energy efficiency, particularly after capacity ramp-up, aligning with Tata Steel’s broader sustainability objectives.

Additional features include advanced process control, extensive automation, and modern cybersecurity systems to ensure consistent, safe, and reliable plant performance. ANDRITZ will supply engineering, mechanical and electrical equipment, and oversee installation and commissioning.
