Henkel and Synthomer Partner to Revolutionize Sustainable Adhesive Production with Carbon Reduction Goals

(IN BRIEF) Henkel and Synthomer have formed a strategic partnership to reduce carbon emissions in the production of Henkel’s TECHNOMELT® hot melt adhesives. This collaboration focuses on integrating renewable energy in the production process and incorporates Synthomer’s CLIMA-branded products to achieve a significant reduction in carbon footprint. Both companies are committed to their sustainability goals, with Henkel targeting a 30% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030 and Synthomer aiming to cut its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 47% by 2030. The partnership highlights the importance of transparency and innovation in driving sustainability across industries.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 30-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Henkel, a global leader in adhesives, sealants, and functional coatings, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Synthomer, a key player in high-performance polymers, to make significant strides in reducing carbon emissions in the production of Henkel’s TECHNOMELT® hot melt adhesives across the European, Indian, Middle Eastern, and African regions. This strategic collaboration underscores the two companies’ shared commitment to sustainability and their drive to innovate within the adhesives sector to reduce the environmental impact of their products.

The initiative builds on Synthomer’s recent introduction of CLIMA-branded products, such as the REGALITETM range, which are designed to lower carbon emissions by at least 20% during the production process by incorporating renewable energy sources. The collaboration between Henkel and Synthomer is focused on creating a clear link between renewable energy usage and specific adhesive products, thereby enabling tangible and measurable reductions in the carbon footprint of these products.

Both companies are working towards ambitious climate targets. Henkel has pledged to cut its absolute Scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030 (using 2021 as the baseline) and aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045. As part of its strategy, Henkel is incorporating raw materials with a lower environmental impact into its adhesive formulas without compromising on quality. Synthomer, in turn, is focused on its operations, targeting a 47% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, using 2019 as its baseline year, in line with the goals of the Science-Based Targets initiative.

Synthomer has made significant advancements in its manufacturing processes, utilizing renewable electricity, biogas, and enhanced process optimization to reduce the carbon footprint of its products. These carbon savings are validated through Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) reports that adhere to ISO14067 standards and the guidelines set by the Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiative. The methodology used in this partnership is being externally verified by TÜV SÜD, ensuring that the progress made is credible and measurable.

“As a leader in the adhesives market, it’s our responsibility to help drive impactful and verifiable change,” said Pernille Lind Olsen, Corporate Senior Vice President of Adhesive Technologies at Henkel. “By collaborating with a partner like Synthomer, who shares our values of transparency and climate action, we are not just reducing carbon emissions; we are setting a new benchmark for industry leadership.”

Stephan Lynen, President of Adhesive Solutions at Synthomer, added, “We are excited to work with Henkel to offer sustainable, innovative adhesive solutions that are backed by a significantly reduced carbon footprint. Our global network, coupled with a portfolio of high-performance ingredients and a strong focus on sustainability, allows us to help our partners develop products with a minimal environmental impact.”

Hot melt adhesives, widely used in industries such as packaging, consumer goods, electronics, and automotive, will benefit from this partnership. By integrating Synthomer’s CLIMA resins into Henkel’s TECHNOMELT® product line, both companies will reduce the environmental impact of these adhesives without sacrificing performance, maintaining the high standards that customers expect.

This partnership is an exemplary model of how companies within the value chain can come together to drive sustainable product development and set new industry standards for carbon footprint reduction.
