Henkel expands thin organic coating portfolio with new colour technology offering enhanced aesthetics and corrosion protection

Henkel is expanding its portfolio in the field of thin organic Coating (TOC) with a new color variant.

(IN BRIEF) Henkel has expanded its thin organic coating (TOC) technology portfolio with a new coloured variant designed to deliver both high performance and aesthetic benefits for coil-coated metal surfaces. The new golden finish, developed for a major construction-industry client, demonstrates how Colour TOC can support product identification, visual differentiation, and anti-counterfeiting while maintaining TOC’s proven strengths such as corrosion protection, strong adhesion, anti-fingerprint properties, and material-efficient 1–2-micron film thickness. The coating integrates easily into existing production lines and ensures consistent colour stability and gloss. Henkel has produced several additional prototype colours, with the flexibility to tailor shades to individual customer needs, extending the design possibilities for metal coils without compromising durability or sustainability.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 3-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Henkel is broadening its offering in thin organic coating (TOC) technology with the introduction of a new colour variant designed to unite high performance with enhanced visual appeal. Developed initially as a golden finish for a major construction-industry customer, the innovation expands the aesthetic possibilities of TOC while maintaining the robust protective qualities that underpin the technology’s established reputation.

TOC is a hybrid coating system in which advanced passivation chemistry is combined with organic polymers to protect metal strips used in coil-coating operations. Known for its reliable adhesion, excellent corrosion protection, lubricity and anti-fingerprint properties, TOC is commonly applied to zinc, aluminium-zinc, and zinc-magnesium-aluminium surfaces. Unlike traditional primer or passivation layers, TOC achieves this performance with an ultra-thin coating of just 1–2 microns, supporting material efficiency and contributing to more sustainable manufacturing without sacrificing durability.

With its new “Color TOC” capability, Henkel is extending the technology’s functionality beyond clear coatings to enable brand-specific or application-driven colour options. In the pilot project, the new golden tone provides a distinct visual identity that makes the coated material easy to identify on-site or in distribution channels. This heightened visibility supports brand differentiation and contributes to anti-counterfeiting measures — challenges that standard transparent TOC systems cannot address.

In addition to its aesthetic role, the coloured coating retains all the technical attributes expected from Henkel’s TOC portfolio: strong corrosion resistance, resilience in humid or water-rich environments, stable gloss levels, and consistent colour quality across large coil surfaces. Manufacturers can integrate the coating into existing coil-coating lines without significant equipment changes, keeping production efficient and adaptable while enabling greater design freedom.

Beyond the golden prototype, Henkel has also created additional colour samples to demonstrate the technology’s full potential. “Alongside the customer-specific golden shimmer variant, we have also developed prototypes in bright green, red, blue and brown based on our Color TOC product,” said Dipak Chaudhari, Product Development Manager IMEA for Industrials at Henkel. “These colours can be further customised to meet the specific requirements of our customers.”
