Fortum Advances Data Centre Site Development in Nurmijärvi with DayOne Partnership

(IN BRIEF) Fortum is supporting DayOne’s planned data centre development in Nurmijärvi, Finland, through a site development agreement that builds on earlier zoning and grid connection preparations at the municipally owned Sudentulli site. The project advances preliminary land sale discussions between DayOne and the Municipality of Nurmijärvi and is designed to accelerate investment readiness without a material financial impact on Fortum. The initiative underscores Fortum’s role in enabling electrification and digitalisation by helping international operators rapidly develop low-emission, energy-intensive facilities supported by reliable and sustainable energy solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 22-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Fortum is supporting the development of a new data centre project in Nurmijärvi, Finland, following the announcement by DayOne, a Singapore-based global data centre developer and operator, of its plans to build a facility in the municipality. The data centre is planned for the Sudentulli planning area, a site owned by the Municipality of Nurmijärvi and identified as a strategic location for large-scale digital infrastructure development.

The project builds on preparatory work initiated in February 2024, when Fortum entered into a planning reservation agreement with the Municipality of Nurmijärvi covering site marketing, zoning, and grid connection support. This initial phase laid the groundwork for positioning Sudentulli as a viable location for a future data centre investment and accelerating the overall development timeline.

Fortum has now signed a site development agreement with DayOne and will continue advancing the work started in 2024. At the same time, DayOne and the Municipality of Nurmijärvi have initiated the process for a preliminary land sale of the Sudentulli site. Under the agreement, Fortum’s role is to support the smooth progress of DayOne’s project development by preparing the site for investment readiness, including early-stage planning and grid-related measures. The site development agreement is not expected to have a material impact on Fortum’s earnings.

The initiative highlights the growing importance of data centre projects in driving electrification and digitalisation across modern economies. Early-stage site development, such as zoning and securing grid connections, can significantly shorten implementation timelines, potentially accelerating project delivery by one to four years. Fortum’s experience in large-scale energy projects and its strong local expertise position the company as a valuable partner for international operators entering energy-intensive digital markets.

Driving decarbonisation in industry while delivering reliable, low-carbon energy remains central to Fortum’s strategy. By enabling rapid site development for data centres and other energy-intensive operations, Fortum aims to help businesses establish new, low-emission facilities that support both digital growth and long-term sustainability goals.
