Fortum Achieves A Score in CDP Climate Assessment, Highlighting Progress Toward Net-Zero and Coal Exit

(IN BRIEF) Fortum has been awarded an A rating in the 2025 CDP Climate Change assessment, improving from its previous A- score and demonstrating strong progress in climate transparency and environmental leadership. The company achieved top marks in 12 out of 16 categories, with particularly significant gains in risk disclosure, reflecting a more mature and comprehensive approach to managing climate-related risks. Based on 2024 performance data, the result coincides with Fortum’s 20th year of reporting to CDP and follows the recent validation of its Paris-aligned emissions targets by the Science Based Targets initiative. With 99% of its power generation coming from low-carbon sources, a planned coal exit by 2027, and a net-zero commitment across its value chain by 2040, Fortum continues to position itself as one of Europe’s least carbon-intensive energy producers and a key contributor to electrification and decarbonisation efforts.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 8-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Fortum has strengthened its position as a climate leader after earning an A rating in the 2025 Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Climate Change assessment, marking an improvement from its previous A- score. The result places Fortum among a select group of companies globally recognised for transparency, governance, and measurable progress on climate action.

Based on performance data from 2024, Fortum achieved the top score in 12 of the 16 assessment categories, representing 75% of the evaluation framework. The company recorded its most notable improvement in risk disclosure, reflecting a more comprehensive and structured approach to identifying and managing climate-related risks across its operations and value chain. The 2025 assessment also marks Fortum’s 20th year of participation in CDP reporting, underlining its long-term commitment to environmental transparency.

Sustainability remains a central pillar of Fortum’s corporate strategy, with climate targets now formally aligned with global standards. In January 2025, the company’s emissions-reduction goals were officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, confirming their consistency with the Paris Agreement. Fortum has committed to achieving net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2040, positioning electrification and clean energy as key enablers of the energy transition in Europe.

Fortum’s power generation portfolio is already among the least carbon-intensive in the region, with 99% of electricity produced using low-carbon technologies. The company has also confirmed plans to exit coal-based power generation by 2027, ahead of many industry peers. Ongoing decarbonisation initiatives include large-scale clean heating projects in Finland and fuel-switching programmes in Poland, where coal is being replaced with biomass and refuse-derived fuels.

The CDP assessment is widely regarded as a global benchmark for corporate climate disclosure, evaluating companies on governance, emissions reduction, risk management, and transparency. Fortum’s A-level rating provides stakeholders and customers with independently verified insight into the company’s progress and long-term climate ambitions.
