Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water to start £4.5M investment scheme aimed at improving the wastewater network in the Rhyl and Kinmel Bay areas

Nelson, Wales, 12-2-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water is set to start work on a £4.5 million investment scheme which will deliver major improvements to the wastewater network in the Rhyl and Kinmel Bay areas.

The scheme, which will involve renewing the existing sewer main from Marine Lake pumping station in Rhyl to Kinmel Bay wastewater treatment works, is due to start in March 2014. The work is expected to be completed within ten months.

This major project which will involve the construction of a 4.2 kilometer sewer main to replace the existing one, has been prioritised as a result of operational issues on the main over the past few years. The scheme will also include replacing a pump within the pumping station at the Marine Lake and improvements to the Green Avenue pumping station which are integral in order to take the raw sewerage from the waste water network and transfer it to the wastewater treatment works in Kinmel Bay where it will be treated to the highest quality to protect the environment, before the final effluent is discharged.

The scheme presents many challenges to Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water as the new main will need to be laid beneath the River Clwyd passing from Denbighshire into Conwy and will then need to pass under the railway line. The company has consulted extensively with Network Rail and worked closely with their representatives to ensure that this section of work will meet all regulations required whilst working near to a railway line. In planning the scheme, the company has also liaised closely with Denbighshire County Council, Conwy County Borough Council and Natural Resources Wales.

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s Capital Delivery Manager, Arwel Jones said: “We are committed to delivering a first class wastewater network to our customers and our investment here reflects this. We have carefully planned the scheme to ensure we minimise disruption on local communities and also liaised with local businesses to ensure they are aware of our plans also. Whilst we are working there will be no impact on the wastewater services to local people”.

Darren Millar, Assembly Member for Clwyd West, accompanied by Assembly Member for the Vale of Clwyd Ann Jones and Member of Parliament for the Vale of Clwyd Chris Ruane, met with the site team to mark the commencement of the scheme. During the visit they were shown the route the new pipeline will take.

Darren Millar AM said “I am pleased that Welsh Water have listened to local residents and committed to start work on this scheme next month.”The benefits of the renewal of this sewerage main are important to my constituents in Kinmel Bay, many of whom have had to ensure the consequences of burst pipes in recent years. “This work will put an end to those problems once and for all.”

Ann Jones, Assembly Member for Vale of Clwyd said: “The start of this scheme marks a major milestone to the improvements in the wastewater network and will benefit local communities for many years to come“

Chris Ruane, Member of Parliament for Vale of Clwyd added: “Moving forward, the communities in Rhyl and Kinmel Bay can be confident that this new sewerage main will deliver a sewerage service that would be expected of this day and age”.

Representatives from Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water will be displaying plans for the investment scheme at two public information events. These events will be an opportunity for local customers to come and find our more about the work and to ask members of the project team any questions they may have about the scheme. The first of these drop-in events will be at Rhyl Town Hall on Wednesday 19th February (between 11am and 7pm) and the second will be at Kinmel Bay Community Centre (also between 11am and 7pm) and Welsh Water will be publicising these events locally.
