Chemetall Transition to 100% Renewable Electricity at Michigan Facility to Reduce CO2 Emissions

(IN BRIEF) Chemetall, part of BASF’s Coatings division, has transitioned its Blackman Township production facility in Michigan to 100% renewable electricity, marking a significant step in its sustainability efforts. Partnering with BASF Renewable Energy, the facility will use wind and solar energy, cutting approximately 950 tons of CO2 emissions annually. This initiative is part of Chemetall’s broader strategy to incorporate renewable energy across its global sites, with a focus on supporting its customers’ sustainability goals. The renewable energy supply is secured through Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (vPPAs), and the contract will be reviewed annually.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 12-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Chemetall, the global business unit of BASF’s Coatings division, has successfully transitioned its Blackman Township production facility in Jackson County, Michigan, USA, to a fully renewable electricity supply. In partnership with BASF Renewable Energy, this shift will utilize renewable resources such as wind and solar power, resulting in a substantial reduction of approximately 950 tons of CO2 emissions in 2025.

This move underscores Chemetall’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, as part of its broader efforts to adopt renewable energy across its 16 global production sites. Through Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (vPPAs), Chemetall will secure approximately 2,500 MWh of renewable electricity annually for its Blackman Township facility.

Frank Naber, Senior Vice President of Chemetall, emphasized the significance of this change: “Sustainability is at the heart of our operations, and this transition to 100% renewable electricity at Blackman Township is a critical step in reducing our carbon footprint. It is a major milestone in our commitment to help our customers reduce their environmental impact while advancing our own sustainability goals. We are proud to play our part in contributing to a more sustainable future.”

The partnership with BASF Renewable Energy will be reviewed on an annual basis to ensure continuous progress in sustainability, with this transition marking an important milestone in the company’s efforts to promote a circular economy and support customers in their own sustainability ambitions.
