Capgemini Report: Generative AI Set to Revolutionize Entry-Level Careers and Redefine Management Roles

(IN BRIEF) The latest report from the Capgemini Research Institute reveals that generative AI (Gen AI) is expected to significantly impact entry-level careers and management roles across industries. Over the next year, Gen AI could take on 32% of entry-level tasks, while employees and managers anticipate a shift towards reviewing AI outputs within three years. Additionally, 78% of business leaders predict that AI will enhance managerial decision-making and problem-solving, leading to more specialized management roles. However, adoption remains low, with many employees lacking the necessary Gen AI skills. The report emphasizes the need for training and development to unlock Gen AI’s full potential in reshaping work processes and job functions.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 18-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — According to the latest report from the Capgemini Research Institute, titled “Gen AI at Work: Shaping the Future of Organizations”, generative AI (Gen AI) is poised to significantly impact entry-level roles and the nature of management across industries. The report predicts that over the next year, Gen AI will handle 32% of entry-level tasks, while within the next three years, most employees and managers expect these roles to evolve from task execution to reviewing AI-generated outputs. This shift is expected to create new job roles and transform how organizations operate.

The report underscores that the adoption of Gen AI is still in its early stages, but it holds immense potential to redefine management roles and career progression. Over three-quarters (78%) of business leaders believe that generative AI will enhance problem-solving and decision-making at the managerial level, allowing managers to focus more on strategic initiatives rather than routine tasks. Additionally, over half of respondents predict that management roles will become more specialized as a result of AI integration.

Capgemini’s findings indicate that Gen AI could save up to 18% of entry-level workers’ time over the next 12 months, leading to significant productivity improvements. However, the report highlights a challenge: most employees currently lack the training necessary to fully leverage Gen AI tools. While 97% of managers and leaders have experimented with Gen AI, only 15% use it daily, indicating a gap between potential and actual usage.

Roshan Gya, CEO of Capgemini Invent, commented, “Generative AI is not just a co-pilot but has the potential to become a co-thinker, capable of engaging in strategic collaboration and challenging assumptions. For organizations to unlock the full value of Gen AI, they must prioritize employee readiness and skill-building in this area.”

The report also predicts a structural shift in organizational roles, with the number of managers increasing and entry-level roles evolving toward frontline managerial positions. Furthermore, 81% of managers anticipate new roles such as AI ethics specialists, data curators, and algorithm trainers will emerge, underscoring the broader impact of AI on the workforce.

Despite the optimism, adoption remains limited, with only 20% of employees using Gen AI tools daily. The report calls for targeted training and the development of Gen AI-specific skills, such as prompt engineering and risk management, to ensure a successful transition toward AI-enhanced roles. Additionally, nearly half of the respondents believe that human-AI collaboration will become essential, with AI tools expected to function as team members or even supervisors in the near future.

Overall, the Capgemini report highlights both the potential and the challenges of generative AI, calling on organizations to invest in training and support systems to foster human-AI collaboration. The study draws from surveys conducted across 15 countries and 11 industries, offering comprehensive insights into how Gen AI is likely to reshape the future of work.
