A face care formulation with 2% Symbiocell® demonstrated significant reductions in skin discomfort and reactivity, outperforming a benchmark product. Feedback from 97% of study participants confirmed enhanced comfort and reduced irritation. Targeting the Asia-Pacific market, Symbiocell® highlights BASF’s focus on innovation, sustainability, and meeting growing consumer demand for effective sensitive skin solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 16-Dec-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — BASF has announced the approval of Symbiocell® as a cosmetic ingredient in China, following a successful new cosmetic ingredient notification. This innovative product, developed by BASF’s Personal Care business, is derived from the leaves of Cestrum latifolium, a plant celebrated in tropical regions for its healing properties. Symbiocell® has been proven through in vitro studies to help maintain healthy basal expression levels of CD86 in skin dendritic cells, offering a soothing effect for sensitive skin and mitigating excessive skin reactions.

Designed to meet the growing demand for sensitive skin care solutions, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, Symbiocell® has shown impressive results in clinical trials. A face care formulation containing 2% Symbiocell® significantly reduced skin discomfort and reactivity. This ingredient aligns with consumer preferences for innovative and effective solutions to common skin concerns.

Clinical Efficacy Demonstrated

BASF conducted a double-blind clinical study with 31 women, comparing a 2% Symbiocell® formulation to a commercially available anti-redness product over three weeks. Results revealed that the side of the face treated with Symbiocell® experienced a 62% reduction in cutaneous discomfort, compared to a 58% reduction for the benchmark product. Additionally, Symbiocell® achieved a significant 20% decrease in the stinging test mean score, while the benchmark product showed only a 14% non-significant reduction.

Volunteer feedback further underscored Symbiocell®’s effectiveness:

  • 97% reported their skin felt more comforted and soothed.
  • 90% noticed less irritation.
  • 87% felt their skin was better prepared to face external aggressors.
  • 71% observed improved skin radiance.

A Sustainable and Innovative Approach

Symbiocell® reflects BASF’s commitment to addressing unmet needs in the sensitive skin care market, particularly in regions like Asia-Pacific where demand is rising. Beyond innovation, the product exemplifies BASF’s Care 360° philosophy, which focuses on sustainability, digitalization, and collaborative approaches to creating solutions for a sustainable future.

This milestone reinforces BASF’s position as a leader in cosmetic ingredient innovation, delivering targeted solutions to consumers while emphasizing its dedication to sustainability and market-driven research. Symbiocell® is poised to become a key player in the sensitive skin care category, meeting the needs of consumers seeking comfort, protection, and radiance.
